Baht bus route signs new?

I guess I've been lucky, last two times resisting the urge to ring the bell going back to Jomtien from Beach Rd. Both drivers just continued driving, picking up and dropping off riders along the way. 20 baht was paid graciously for a more comfortable ride, not asked for, just given.

The other day a rider and driver got into it at the turn off on 2nd Rd. According to the driver coming from Jomtien to North Pattaya is worth 20 baht, not 10.

If going from Pattaya to Jomtien, I always get off at Pattaya Tai (or beach road if they kick me off) to take a new bus at the school queue even when they turn towards Jomtien. Sometimes if they are going towards there, I get off and ask them if they are going there, and every time I've done that the driver has rudely told me to bugger off. Years ago I used to risk staying on the bus in that scenario, and about half the time the drivers TURNS OFF before arriving in Jomtien, sometimes in heavy rain, So never again for me.

This might not be an issue for you if you don't mind standing in the back. I do mind.

As far as Jomtien to Pattaya, the correct fare is 10 baht as far as Pattaya Klang, but after that, generally 20. Just because a small minority of drivers will push back at taking 10 before Klang

(somewhat becoming more common in PEAK high season) doesn't mean that the real fare is 20. It's 10.

I don't think it's a matter of cheap or not cheap. It's a matter of paying the CORRECT fare. A bottle of water at 7 baht may be cheap at 7-11 but that doesn't mean you pay 20 for it.

Yep, like I said, must have been lucky. Now that you mention it, there have been a few times when they go straight instead of turning towards Jomtien, probably going to Bali Hai I guess as I always got off. Not much fun in the rain I'm sure :-).

As I do, but I always go past Pattaya Tai when coming back into Pattaya, which is where the 10 baht fare stops.

No, it does not but drivers are happy that many people think that.

The vast majority of drivers (over many years now with frequent rides) will indeed accept 10 baht as far as Klang without any pushback whatsoever.

I realize some people are easily intimidated and experience pushback once and come to the false conclusion that behavior is normal and usual. It is not.

But pay what you want. If you want to tip 100 percent every time, enjoy the warm and fuzzies.

Honestly, many drivers will still accept 10 baht past Klang, but a significant percentage will not, which is why I pay 20 for that and recommend others do as well.

The fact is there are no official rules on this. The baht bus cooperative defines 10 baht as the fare with 20 baht for very long rides, but never defines very long rides.

Because the vast majority of drivers do not pushback before Klang, I take that to mean the rough interpretation by the majority of drivers is that 10 baht is the correct fare as far as Klang.

It's not a black and white system, like it or not. The drivers like that I'm sure because more people will overpay that way.

Another thing to add, some people might think the low rate of pushback at accepting 10 up to Klang is because the drivers don't remember where you got on. I've come to the conclusion that most drivers remember very well where you got on. Evidence of that is also in my experience. Try paying 10 PAST Klang ... the high pushback rate proves they DO remember.

I will admit I don't have a vast experience attempting to pay 10 past Klang coming from Jomtien. Perhaps some of you have been paying 10 for that for years with little pushback. I really don't think so based on my experience (basically tests) but if so, please share.

I pay 100 baht for lottery tickets..

I tip 20 baht in restaurants...

I always tip a motorcycle taxi if he does not overcharge

I always pay 20 baht from Pattaya to Jomtien on a baht bus..

Why?

Because its the right thing to do...fair to me fair to the other person..

That's just how I roll...

Tourist? :stoner:

I always tip in restaurants but it's not the same thing. We're talking a bus truck fare and the drivers have a very good idea of what the correct fare is. If the majority thought the correct fare past Tai until Klang was 20 and not 10 the pushback rate would be high. It is not.

They are not shy!

That explains the driver's frustration at 2nd and North Pattaya Rd. demanding 20 baht for the ride from Jomtien with the other rider.

I gave 20 baht for the virtually uninterrupted ride from Beach Rd. to Jomtien because that would be the regular price if switching rides on 2nd Rd. Or you can just say taxi and get one for yourself for 200 baht at 2nd to Jomtien:-).

After all the brouhaha about new routes, new fares, army crackdowns, end of excursions off route and private hires, what has actually changed? Apart from most taxis picking up and dropping off at more bus stops (but only where the police are known to be close by), nothing has changed. Zilch, diddley squat.

To be clear if I ever got a ride from Beach Road to Jomtien I would also without any prompting pay 20 baht. But as discussed that's not a common scenario. If you are looking for logic about why one ride is 10 and the opposite direction 20 I'm not your man. The accepted fare Jomtien as far as Klang is still 10 baht logic be damned.

Yes most drivers will demand and I do mean demand in the strongest sense 20 baht from Jomtien to North Pattaya Road.

The only time I was demanded extra was once at Central Festival from Jomtien, gave the gf the 20 extra baht without question and without any hint of agitation and proceded to take a photo of his truck with the number.  He got out of his truck, highly upset.  I just shrugged my shoulders and moved on, it's not illegal to take pictures of a truck on public property last I checked :-).

Nope, it's 10 baht all the way to Pattaya Klang  . Still 10 baht , I always make sure to have that important coin with me.

So why aren't they sticking to the signboard on their pick-ups and fetch us all the way to Jomtien ?  The issue of 10 baht or 20 baht does not yet arise because we are being jettisoned at Wat Chai Mongkol and forced to "fall in" in single file under the strict order of the 50+ female platoon commander known as "Pa".

So what is the logic ?  The extra load from Wat Chai Mongkol to Jomtien would eat more gas ?

I have always paid 10 baht from Thappraya to Dolphin Circus.  No questions asked.

Where on Tappraya?

Parts of it are well into South Pattaya.

Thepprasit entering Thappraya at the foot of Pratumnak.

That's an interesting report. That counts as Jomtien. Now I'm wondering how many times in a year you make that run.

I've been suggesting people pay 20 after Klang coming from Jomtien, especially as far as North, based on personal experience of push backs paying 10 (as that's the only way to determine the "real" fares).

At least once a day.  Sometimes I would board at Foodmart; sometimes at Pratumnak outside Mata Hari.

For months?

I visit Pattaya every month, each time for a week.  And that is the only way I get to town.  Sometimes twice or thrice a day.

Well, it's one report and it's an interesting one.

I used to do "tests" of paying 10 after Klang and determined the probability of pushback is high.

Your report calls that conclusion into doubt.

I am not yet ready to make any changes based on one report, but if others want to try that out ... please do, report back, and it's better if you have good health insurance.

I'm open minded, but still cautious.

There are still so many people that totally incorrectly believe they need to pay 20 after Pattaya Tai. Those people definitely wrong.

So I may be wrong in the conclusions I've made after Klang, but I'm not there yet.

I will add, for those testing, if you are challenged even if you're sure you're in the right, you do risk violent assault.

I'm waiting for the day to have you next to me on a baht bus. But how would I know that it's you?
