This topic comes up quite often here.

In addition to buying expiry one can also make 12 separate, individual top-ups at a Boonterm kiosk (orange, outside every convenience store in the country; in every BTS station), for 10 baht each (12 baht with the 2 baht fee), each yielding 30 days; so you get 120 baht credit, for 144 baht, and 360 days.

Most SIMs allow this although some may have a 90 day cap; and you may be required to have some activity (top-up, make a call, send an SMS) on a SIM in a 90 day period. Making a 10 baht top-up each month satisfies this requirement.

DTAC gives me 6 months  (180 days)  of validity for 12 Baht, or 1 year (360 days) for 24 Baht, so I don't need to top up anything to keep it active

I would hope that AIS has a similar system but am not sure

When I add money to True I get it extended for 1 year. Not sure how that happened though, the first few times it was for a shorter period of time. Maybe ask them.

Hard to know for sure without more details but it is likely that you currently have an expiry of 330 days, and then when you top up you get another 30 days for the maximum of 360/5 days. This sort of rolling, accumulated situation is quite common.

Or are you saying your SIM was due to expire tomorrow, you added some money and voila, ended up with an expiry of 1/27/2018?

Again, DTAC and TrueMove H do have a means to purchase expiry using USSD or IVR, assuming you meet their terms and conditions (like having the SIM for at least 90 days), for 2 baht/30 days, in various increments, so 24 baht/360/5 days.

I haven't seen this with AIS but some people claim you can contact them and purchase expiry. (Yes, AIS does have Mao-Mao option which does result in 30 days additional expiry, for a package at 30 baht giving 30 minutes of calls.)

You should also check with your provider to see if they have a requirement for usage in any 90 day period.

Is there some restrictions of this? I was hoping to add a couple of 180 day extensions on for 24THB.

For True Move it says:

> Press : * 934 * 180 # for 180 days extension.   Cost 12 Baht

So when I tried it I was charged 12 THB ++ but only given 90 days? When I tried it again True message was that it was an invalid instruction and my expire date remained at 3 months extra. I was hoping to add a year. I am wondering if there is a restriction based on time SIM has been active since it is about 6 months old?

There definitely is a restriction on this but I thought it was that the SIM must be at least 2 months old. I use * 934 * 180 # twice a year to extend my SIM with no difficultly. The last time I did it was around a month ago.

But it sounds like you are trying to extend beyond 365 days (ie two 180 day extensions plus whatever you already had). You cant do this. I always add 6 months to mine when it drops below 6 months as it wont go beyond 365 days.

For what it's worth, if they have taken the 12B you will probably get the full 180 days applied at some point but you may need to wait for the current validity to drop before it happens. It did this on mine the first time I extended it also.

Maybe that's my problem - thanks. The wife got me this new True SIM card because it was a "lucky" number (I don't agree with all this but never argue with the wife over such matters!), and on the package it says Tourist SIM. I have no idea what the point of having a tourist SIM is or whether I need to ask change it to an "expat" SIM as I am no tourist.

Some SIMs have a maximum 90 day expiry -  we are running out of numbers again - so maybe check with the provider to see what the terms associated with your SIM are, and if they can be modified.

Some SIMs may have a usage requirement of once in any 90 day period.

IME, most 50 baht SIMs can be topped up 12 times, for 12 baht each time, for 144 baht, and 120 baht credit (so essentially a 24 baht fee), good for 360 days. It is advisable to top up or make a call/send an SMS at least once every 90 days.

I manage a group of SIMs from AIS, DTAC and TrueMove H for friends/visitors; once a month I top-up ~ 12 SIMs at a Boonterm machine, all have a max. of 366 days after a top-up. These orange machines are everywhere, including every BTS station.
