The best way is to not go by minivan..........unless you have a death-wish.

Often best is not cheapest.

You could try the yacht marinas. Many yachts go from Phuket to Langkawi.

You could exchange work for passage.

As the OP mentioned, he /she can take a Bus to Satun and then the ferry. This is most likely not only the best and most hassle-free but as well the cheapest way. Going to Penang first would be nonsense as it is South of Langkawi and would mean backtracking and for sure it will not be cheaper. Most likely two Bus rides will be needed, from Phuket to Trang, and from there another Bus to Satun. In Satun, you will probably need to take a Sawngthaew to get to the Thammalang pier, as I doubt any Bus will go there (it is about 10km South of the actual town proper). Minivans maybe do, but as others have mentioned, don't do that if you value your life (plus those vans offer ZERO space for any sort of luggage except an average BigC-plastic-bag maybe.

Keep in mind that there are only 3 ferries per day, leaving the Thammalang pier at 9.30 am, 1.30 pm and 4 pm so plan your trip accordingly.

SELAMAT JALAN !

Fly Phuket to Penang, then fly Penang to Langkawi.

Or, fly Phuket to KL, then KL to Langkawi.

Not the cheapest, but the best. (quickest and safest)    If you look at the prices, it's not that expensive.

You can go from Phuket bus station to Hat Yai by VIP coach.  Around 400 baht.  Options then from Hat Yai to the ferry port at Kuala Perlis to get to Langkawi.

why on earth would anyone go all the way down to Kuala Perlis from Hat Yai and then backtrack in a big way when there is a short and direct connection via Satun

Because in the second part of the OP there is mention of going to Penang. I'm assuming the OP is looking at public transport. AFAIK there is no direct bus to Satun. Which means going to Hat Yai then 110 km to Tammalang Pier.

Hat Yai to Kuala Perlis is 100km.  Plus I would FAR sooner get the border control out of the way at Dannok than Langkawi.  There is also a direct VIP bus from Phuket to Dannok (Bukit Kayu Hitam) from where Kuala Perlis is only 40 km away with plenty of transport, so the OP doesn't even need to go to Hat Yai.

Ferry is 1 hr 15 mins from both.  3 boats a day from Satun. 10 a day from KP.

So, try to get from Phuket to Satun via Hat Yai AND time the arrival for one of only three ferries AND put up with the wait at Langkawi immigration

OR

Direct from Phuket to Dannok, get immigration out of the way there, transport direct to Kuala Perlis with arrival times having 10 ferries a day to coincide with.  Take yer pick.

Looking at your posts in the past, I think you will have big problem travelling around Thailand as you don't have a clue about anything to be honest, better to stay home and keep wife and children safe, if you end up feeding the fish in wrong place could go to jail (prison) or big fine, or break visa rule big problem for you, have holiday in UK much better for you
