There is no way that the claim can be made that this was a "gangland killing" until the BIB have discovered their motive .

As the killers were so "unprofessional"  , it and he may have nothing to do with gangs

It looked well planned out to me. Not the usual spraying of bullets with most missing.

The way he casually walked up and popped the guy looked professional to me.

The way he did it on CCTV makes me think the only way it's professional is that he got paid to do it.

The fact that they did it in broad daylight, in public and in view of a CCTV suggests that they were either quite"unproffesional" or they just didnt care about getting caught

Boiler rooms mentioned... easy to get involved in unsavory stuff

Porsche mentioned...

Any connection?

If he was really involved in a boiler room racket, it is most likely he came to Thailand without much money and got rich enough to buy the Porsche from criminal activities in Thailand. The ones who make the big money are the founders and organisers of the scams.  They recruit farang down and outs and train them up to do tele sales to marks in farang countries picked at random from any directories and lists they can get hold of.  The callers are trained to call with scripts that deal with all known objections put up by the marks and play on the greed and stupidity of the small percentage that don't smell a rat immediately and hang up.  The classic and original boiler scam is selling the marks stocks traded on the pink lists in the US.  If you look into an online broker like Etrade, this look just like proper stocks traded on the NYSE or NASDAQ, except they have little or no volume but that will not be obvious to inexperienced traders.  Since there is no volume because these stocks are rarely traded, it is easy for the the gangsters to manipulate the shares any way they want by just buying a few shares at a time.  After recommending one of these stocks, they start pushing it up and keep calling the mark up, asking him to check the price until he gets in a complete funk worrying he is going to miss out on this once  in a lifetime gusher, without pausing to reflect on why the caller would want to share it without a complete stranger he has just cold called.  Since the mark has knowledge of how to trade stocks, he will be convinced that he has to open an account with a non-existent broker in order to get a private placement of the stock at a discount or some such.  He will hurriedly transfer his savings to to a bank account in Taiwan or somewhere (previously HSBC in Hong Kong) to open the fake account.  Then the money is transferred out and the account is closed down and he never hears from the same  boiler room again.   There are numerous variations of the scam including tree farms, football funds etc etc.

Turf wars are common amongst boiler rooms, who fight each other to poach callers and lists of marks.  One of them was murdered in Bangkok a few years ago.  The suspect mastermind was his former partner in a boiler room.  The suspect, as US citizen was extradited by a US judge who must have thought that the evidence presented by the Thai government was convincing enough to extradite a US citizen to face the death penalty in Thailand.  But in the event he was aqcuitted by the Thai court.

Thai authorities have historically tolerated the boiler rooms, as long as they only  target foreigners abroad or foreign expats in Thailand, don't encroach on the turf of local gangsters and wai local cops with sufficient respect.  When they are raided, they are usually only ever charged with immigration and work permit offences.  Some of them have diversified into other twilight businesses, such as girlie bars and property.

And if, and I say if, he was involved in the above this is the reason why I, and a few others on this thread, wouldn't care tuppence about his demise.

roo86,  if you've lived here long enough you will understand that (sometimes) if a Thai loses face over the stupidest little thing - that he created - he can go crazy and kill you - especially if you are a farang that didn't lose face - and he can do it for pennies on the dollar if he won't do it himself... never mind going to jail for life.
I sleep with a dog, security cameras, and a 1 meter samurai sword at night; (evertying else is secret); I'm prepared if possible, am cautious, realistic, and not paranoid. Yes, I've been attacked twice for the stupidest shit that THEY created.

Terry thanks for the heads up, have been here long enough thanks, I don't have any need to sleep with a dog, I prefer my wife. But if you're happy with your security arrangements, then fair play mate.

Unless you know more, any association with 'gangland' is most unfair to the victim. He is far more likely the victim of a failed extortion than anything else.

Most unfortunate.

I am sure some idiot will think it is funny to say "RTP call it suicide" or  something similar,  but that is the type of wa*%ers you get on this forum.

No one knows at this time if the guy was

A) Part of a Boiler Room scam operation,

B). A Victim of the above scam or

C) Working on someone's behalf investigating into the problem for someone who had been taken by the said scam

Until then folks, all the above posts are a complete and utter waste of everyone's time to read and reply to no?

If  any of the above come to be the TRUTH, I stand by the following answers :

A) The guy got what he deserved as I know first hand with a family member how it destroyed their life when sadly they were hoodwinked into something like this

B).  Very sad that they fell victim twice, once financially and then with their life

C) Pretty much the same as B except for the fact that in that line of work, you know the dangers of dealing with criminals, be it here in "Life is cheap" Thailand, or anywhere else you decide to go and investigate.

I would prefer for no lives to be lost, if that's not too much to ask.

News flash, do you have gangs in your country?  Do they kill people on occasion?  Are these killings usually random or they planned revenge killings?  Hint: let's meet in broad daylight by the Dam in neutral territory to sort this out.

I think it is okay to move here if you have money, but seriously unwise to show it. Fine if you drive a modest car and house, the less people can see the better.

Sp why come here and dont enjoy your money. In Switzerland , ordinary gas stations have Lamborgini for sale and no one attemps to steal them

A lot of speculations in this thread. However , we all know that very rarely people are getting killed for nothing. Especially when we see that this was a well thought through hit. The exact reason may be never known to the wide public.

Sounds like you know just too much not to have a connection yourself.

No reason to believe he did any dodgy things but his wife must be very ill informed or too well informed if he was into BR's.

From the news:

Kernway's wife Somporn, 32, told police her husband  had set up a company doing website design at Jomtien Beach. He lately had a business conflict with a shareholder, but she did not know if this was the motive for the murder.

I recommend the dog moves out. Far too dangerous sleeping next to a nervous man with a samurai sword.

Very sad, but in all honesty, why would someone being murdered like that when there's no reason to? Of course, it might be a case of mistaken identity, but to me it looks like a deliberate execution, for whatever reason.. As someone here stated earlier, if you are not involved in any way with Thai criminals the chances of getting killed the way this poor man was killed are astronomically low... Living here since 2007 I never, ever felt unsafe. Probably also because I don't go out late at night and stay as far away from Thai criminals as I can.... Anyway, R.I.P. to the poor man and my condolences to his family....

I would think that the reason he can afford a Porsche is because he lives and operates in Thailand.  If he was in a country which had the rule of law he would no doubt be in prison.  It is reported that it was a gangland killing.
