I was in Bangkok last week and stopped by the Honey and was told they would be closing in September.      Have stayed there many times over the years going back to the early seventies.    A sad day for sure.

Think there is already another thread running about this from a few weeks back.

It is indeed an end of another era , and there really aren't many of those 70's style hotels left now. As much as a bit of a dump it has become, having used the hotel numerous times ovr many years it's a little bit of history gone.  Always found the staff there to be very nice, so hope they all get well looked after.

That may have been the Federal Hotel on Sukh 11, which was demolished a couple of years ago. The Retro Oasis Hotel on Sukh 29 still has an old pool in the courtyard.

I knew one like that…The Miami Hotel on soi 15. Styed there for precisely 20 min….checked out the minute i saw the first cockroach.

Yes the Miami, got a one night into that dump from the hotel desk at then Don Mueang airport.
A so called taxi driver moved me to the Rex hotel next morning, nice people, double pricing.
Spent many trips there before moving to the Suk Sofitel...
Demolished now.

That's it. Miami. Arrived late evening and walked to the Nana before breakfast.

I went to book in at the Honey Hotel about two years back as I had read good reports about it, I asked them about wifi in the room and they said no wifi, maybe they meant you had to pay for it,  how mean is that? Any money from wifi for a hotel is about 100% profit, is there really any hotels left now that does not have wifi? If there are I would not give them any business.

I tried the Miami Hotel a while back, paid for my room, this was about 3pm, when I got there, the first thing I did was put on the AC, it was not working, so I went to the reception and was told the engineer was due to come and fix it about 7pm, I did not ask for another room after service like that, nor would I have taken it if I was offered it.

I asked for my money back though, and I got it.

The  Manhattan did a few years back, but probably not nowadays.

Having said that, I have used that place in the past as a cheaper option.

I remember that I went in "from the street" for one night after missing a connection. The cost had jumped up.

The clientele had changed too. Many more Chines and Koreans. They were not a problem except that the breakfast buffet had been changed in accord with their tastes.

Obvious I suppose, but these two factors have meant that I will not go there again.

The Manhattan is very clean.

I seem to remember that they fumigate the rooms on regular intervals.

The Miami has a dubious reputation. Cheap, not over-fussy and short time accommodation. On Soi 15.

The wife and I spent a week or so in the Honey around seven years ago. They wouldn't serve her breakfast. They said breakfast was for guests only. After we checked out, we agreed never to stay there again.

I'm not surprised it's closing down. Once they started building Terminal 21 down on the corner, that area wasn't going to be Honey-type territory again.

Being knocked down is not a surprise; it was there a long time.  I lived not far from there and ate lunch there a couple of times.  Have not been back to BKK since Terminal 21 was built.

this got me wondering…did i stay at the Miami or the Manhattan….it was definitely on soi 15 right on the main road

Built in 68 I think, stopped going there when the maid told my 'girlfriend' I was always taking different women back there! Amazed the Miami is still going, stayed there 20 years ago an it was like a mental hospital then, worst hotel on Suk I had ever been in. They did warn me to be careful of a SC girl though as I took her up to the room, they were right 30 minutes later had to get security to chuck her out, nuts.

nope, it has been knocked down

But the very nice lady receptionist now works in the newish hotel on the corner of Rattanathibet and Sanam Bin roads. The Vresotel. Super clean at 900 a night.

Walked in their by chance a few months back and was surprised I recognized her instantly from long ago. She also remembered me which was even more surprising.

Not many GI hotels left now. Think the Florida is still going though. Don't know about the Crown on Suk 29 though.....or the Lucky. And does anyone remember the Rich hotel with its nearby Isaan crooner restaurant. One of the first to go. The Liberty was also demolished about a year ago. Wonder what happened to the statue at the front door. Reno is still standing though.

Crown Suk 29. is gone but the Suk. Crown off Suk. Soi 8 is still open though under a new name and with all the ceiling and bedside mirrors along with the disco lights removed.

Both the Suk. Crown and the Miami had truly hard core Chinese aunties at the front desks.  Only thing that would make them smile is a guest dying after having paid in advance.

Hey man,

Tell me more about this, please. I live in the area. And I have stayed at Rex heaps of times.

I know Rattana.

If you cross Saphan Phra Nang Klao from west to east, is Sanam Bin Naam road the first or maybe 2nd road off to the left?

Mebbee she would even recognize me.

From the west bank you need to take the old bridge across the river and the Vresotel is on the hard on the left before Sanam Bin road behind the Versailles restaurant.

If you get up on the new bridge it goes way past the Sanam Bin junction.

The Vresotel is easily found on booking.com or other accommodation sites.

The rooms are brand new and spotlessly clean with very comfortable beds. On the downside, no balcony and small window so a little claustrophobic. Also , nearest 7/11 is a bit of a hike involving crossing the footbridge and a 200 meter walk. No restaurants near the hotel either apart from a few basic noodle or khao moo deng eateries. Yes the rooms are good for the money but eating out requires stamina or your own transport.

Having said that, the purple line railway is open and right outside the hotel. A short train ride can take you to either Central Bangyai or Central Rattansthibet where you can pit the feedbag on in style.

The "Malaysia Hotel" on Soi Ngam DuPlii near Sathorn is another "GI" hotel still in operation and not much changed from 20 years ago...including some of the staff.
