Vientiane - Udon Thani Crossing dilemma

Featured Replies

I have an issue and need suggestions please. I'll have completed 2 years of O.A retirement 02/21/2017. I've a ticket to USA to get another O.A.

In the meantime also have a Thai Airways ticket to get SETV in Vientiane traveling via Udon Thani. My flight arrives 11:45am on 2/21 in Udon, can I drop off my application same day and pickup next day? Otherwise I'll miss my return fly on the night of the 22nd. Since I seem to have screwed up on the airline booking could I get 30-days VE at the boarder?

You cannot arrange an SETV in time if you only arrive in Udon Thani at 11:45 am on 21 Feb and need to fly back on 22 Feb. There should be no problem getting a visa exempt entry

Thaivisa friends.... for the benefit of others reading this and less seasoned in the lingo, I would suggest the use of abbreviations only after introducing the term spelled out fully the first time.  This is very helpful in learning what the abbreviations or acronyms mean and doesn't exclude the ignorant.   In this case, "O.A." and "VE" are mysterious terms to me.  Maybe if I just thought about it enough, I would figure them out.

Thanks!

just get the 30day visa exempt at border.

How many hours is required in Laos to obtain Visa Exemption at the border? I would rather not stay overnight if no time for SETV.

You only to need to be out of the country long enough  to enter another country, turn around and come back.

isn't possible to extend the O-A visa in thailand for another year ?  and then every year after that.  a few months ago i went on a semi-rant about the O-A retirement visa being somewhat odd in that you retire in thailand but have to go back to your home country to get another one every two years.  but a TV member corrected me and said it can be extended in thailand.

seems like getting an extension of stay plus a multi entry re-entry permit prior to going to USA would be easier than getting a new O-A.  especially if the only purpose of the trip to USA is to get a new O-A.  (maybe the OP doesn't have the 800,000 in a thai bank needed for ext ?  but could get the income letter from USA embassy).

Once through the Lao side, simply turn around and come back. Depending on the line ups it should not take long. My last trip I was back in Thailand within the hour.

Don't forget you will need a Lao visa. Just apply and pay at the windows when you arrive at the border crossing on the Lao side.

O.A.  = see link below

VE = "Visa Exempt"/ listed in link as "... Allowed (X)-Day Stay Without a Visa..."
