LAMPANG: -- Four year old twins got married in Lampang yesterday according to local beliefs.

Many country Thais believe that twins should atone for unhappiness in previous lives by "marrying" in this life, reported Thairath.

Yesterday's ceremony in Muang district of the northern Thai province attracted many relatives to see Nes and Nong Nae tie the knot on an occasion with all the trappings of a real wedding.

And the gathering was delighted when Nes, the bride, planted a lovely kiss on her brother Nong Nae's cheek.

Grandmother Jandee said that the ceremony would help to ensure a good future for the twins who at the moment are in the care of a children's home.

The dowry was a five baht gold necklace and 50,000 baht in cash - making a total of about 150,000 baht.

In the west, this would be considered child abuse...

And, after the honeymoon, the parents could be arrested and have their children taken from them.

My opinion of course.

I'm respectfuly of local customs, but I find this a bit odd. :shock1:

If you think that this is bad enough......I have a thai couple in my moo baan who wants that their only son grow up to be gay(not kathoey) and get married to another guy.The kid is only 7 years old! They think that its cute and trendy to have a gay son! What is the world coming to!

No, it wouldn't be child abuse, the word that is used in these ceremonies is "marry" (in inverted commas), not marry.  It is a tradition, that's all, they are not really married and there will not be a honeymoon!

The parents couldn't be arrested "in the west" and have the children removed for a traditional, good luck party with no legal implications whatsoever in which no one was married and no one was abused.

What exactly is sick about it?

Ritual incest, sick indeed

If you think that this is incest then you don't know what incest is. There is no incest going on in these ceremonies neither is there any suggestion of it.

I just find adults forcing very young children to be involved in adult rituals that they don't understand to be a little off putting. It's definitely not incest. I also don't like to see very young girls tarted up in heavy makeup by their mother for performances, etc...

"  the ceremony would help to ensure a good future for the twins who at the moment are in the care of a children's home. "

sounds like they are better off.......

just being mildly punished for something they are told they did wrong in a past life..... must make them feel better

What about lefties? People who are left handed. Do they get married to atone as well? I know two kids who have cleft palates. Get married already!

Remember, everyone - Buddhism is not a religion. I mean where's the worshipping? Reincarnation is totally scientific.

The kids are already in a care home.

The chicken got a bigger dowry !

The dowry is usually paid by the groom to the bride's parents. W T F happens here?

"They shalt not fornicate" - Chiang Mai cops determined to stop teens having sex on Valentine's Day

Lets just hope they did not had a wedding night !

Back in my married days I brought my old ma out so she could meet her in laws.

Mistake she hated Thailand from day one, April and far too hot.

At my home up country a little girl was being 'Done up' full makeup for a school play/event.

My Ma threw a wobbler, disgraceful no way you can do that to a child.

Mam it's for a school do, Roman Catholic school, nuns and all.

Disgusting disgraceful should not be allowed.

East is East and West is West.
