BANGKOK: -- The Mazda CX-3 has been named Thailand Car of the Year 2016 by the Thai Automotive Journalists Association (TAJA).

The event was held for the second year, with 10 models competing for the crown. The others were MG5, MG GS, BMW X1, BMW 7 Series, Honda BR-V, Honda Civic, Thairung TR Transformer 2, Mercedes-Benz GLC and Mercedes-Benz GLC.

Only new (model change) vehicles assembled in Thailand and officially launched during October 1, 2015 to September 30, 2016 were eligible for the award.

Scores were awarded over two rounds – online votes from the first round and final round, with actual testing by more than 50 TAJA members at the Thailand Circuit in Nakhon Chaisri held last month.

Last year the Ford Everest PPV won the inaugural award, edging out the Mazda2 by a few points.

TAJA president Yutthapong Pasee said the purpose of the TCOTY is to promote the Thai automobile industry by awarding outstanding products that set new standards in their respective segments.

“The award is given by top experts from the automotive media and consumers can rely on the results, which are based on all aspects including design, performance, safety, technology, practicality, pricing and eco-friendliness,” he said.

The voting format was similar to other international car awards such as the European Car of the the Year and Japan Car of the Year. In the final round, each jury had 25 points in hand for scoring. A mandatory 10 points was given to the top model, while the remaining 15 points were distributed among other contenders.

“We have just one award for the winner, with no sub-categories, and is the most transparent and trustworthy auto award in the country,” he added.

Auto awards are common in Thailand, but most hand out multiple prizes in different categories, and are often seen as promotional tools for auto companies.

This Mazda is rather a super good looking car and if it runs as well as it looks it deserves this award.

My partner and I have been looking at this quite seriously as our next car.

In December 2015 we went to buy a Honda CRV, the one we test drove would not pull the skin off a rice pudding and they dealer could not tell me when the bigger engined one would be available. Neither could Honda in Bangkok. Ditto the HRV. How could they not have an answer to this? We then looked at everything from Merc, BMW, Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi etc and then went to look at a Mazda CX5 but while there we saw and also drove the CX3. We bought the CX3 there and then.

It's a great little car and goes like a rocket.

I have one, and love. Power to weight ratio is fantastic, and the handling on the less than ideal Thai roads is top notch. My only caveat would be that it is suited to an individual or couple, not families. If you need space, opt for the roomier HRV..... having said that, the HRV is much slower, handles not as well, and is comparatively bland both inside and out.

Is the AWD version of this available here ?

No....4wd is in the cx-5, which would be my choice over the cx-3. Fast diesel engine and more room.

The main issue with the cx-3 is that is has not much space at all.

Yeah the cx-3 is good for 2 people running around but the cx-5 is far better.

Don't get why they don't sell the AWD version here. Guess its like most things here , you either cant get the model you want or if you can you will pay through the nose !!

... and Mercedes-Benz GLC

I thought the GLC was assembled in China and Germany - see here.

GLC's assembled in Thailand? I don't think so.

Catholicism: if shit happens, you deserve it

Judaism: why does this shit always happen to us?

Atheism: I don't believe this shit

Yes, they are now. Started towards the end of last year, at which time the price dropped to reflect that as well.

I don't understand the attraction of the CX3. For the same money you can get the Mazda 3 with the same engine and more space.

Higher clearance for the rainy season. Also provides easier loading and unloading and access and egress for passengers and drivers. For those with small children, it also helps getting the car seat in and out, plus the kiddie, of course.
