I need to buy a new pair of prescription glasses , and Ive decided to try buying them online ( Zenni ) so I need an eye prescription to send with my order. Can any one recommend some where in Korat where I can obtain an eye prescription. I have thought of St Mary's hospital , but wondered if there’s any alternatives .

Thanks

A major hospital with an ophthalmology department is your best option, the bonus being you will probably get a pretty good eye exam in the process.  Make sure you tell them you want a vision test and make sure the prescription includes "pupilary distance" (PD), frame width is also useful.

Most Thai optical shops have technicians with questionable qualifications performing eye exams.

I've had very good service from Zenni.

Thanks for the comment / advice its appreciated.

I have recently been to the one local optician ( Top Charoen ) to see how much it would be to buy and have fitted new lenses into an existing set of frames , the lenses would be plastic progressive with an anti scratch coating , and have a graduated tint .

The local optician quoted a price of  10,500 Baht + anti scratch coating ( lenses only ) , if I wanted thinner / lighter plastic lenses the cost would be 13,500 Baht.

So I thought I would give Zenni a try.

So I need a written eye prescription to send with my order , so far Ive contacted the following hospitals in Korat to see if they can provide an eye test and written eye prescription.

1. St Mary’s Hospital =  answer , sorry we do not recommend that you use a eye test prescription from the hospital , as its better to get your eyes tested at the opticians where you are purchasing the glasses from . ( I did not mention to them that I needed the  written eye test prescription , to allow me to purchases glasses online. )

2. Fort Suranaree Military Hospital and Suranaree University of Technology Hospital =  sorry no.

3 Bangkok Hospital Korat = can test and provide a written  eye prescription ( 1,500 Baht + )

4. Korat Memorial Hospital = No , but they have an opticians shop in the hospital grounds , where you can ask for a written eye test prescription .

I’m not too happy about asking an opticians shop to just provide a  written eye prescription .

So it looks like the only current option to obtain  a written  eye prescription   ,  is at Bangkok Hospital Korat .

Unless any one knows a better option .:wai:

An eye exam by an Ophthalmologist at Rutnin Eye Hospital in Bangkok was B1300 so your hospital quote is not far off.

If you don't mind telling a fib,  just tell them you need to update your prescription for your home country health care provider.

As a point of reference, the progressive lenses and frames I purchased from Zenni were $130. Delivery charge to Thailand was less than $10 and took 10 days from order completion as they are sent direct from their manufacturing facility in China. My prescription is a very strong one. Past lenses were always thick and heavy. The hi index lenses from Zenni are the thinnest, lightest and most comfortable I have ever worn.

dddave  “10 days from order completion”

Sorry to be pedantic, but does this mean 10 days from the day you actually placed the order or 10 days from the point where they finished making the glasses at the factory?

What I’m trying to determine is, how many days was it from the day you placed the order online to the day the glasses were delivered to your house?

Also, how they were sent i.e., Post Office, DHL, TNT or what?

I ask this because we have to go away for a few days soon and I want to be sure I am here when the glasses are delivered.

Thanks.

Sometimes, a particular lens or prescription may not be appropriate for a selected frame which can lead to a few days delay as customer service and the customer email back and forth, getting the order right. All three times I have ordered from Thailand, the glasses have been delivered within 10 days of the order being completed, that is, all details of the order satisfactory and sent on to the factory.

My building has a daytime reception desk and my deliveries were accepted by the receptionist.  I believe they were sent by regular post, not an express delivery service but I'm not 100% certain of that.  I've never been charged any duty or fees.  I live in Bangkok.  Delivery to a provincial post office might possibly take a few days longer.

The glasses come packaged inside a plastic case that also includes a cleaning cloth.

Yeah strange that. I had my son checked/tested at St Mary's. Cost 1,000 Baht. I had a CT scan done on my chest and asked for a copy of the test. They gave me 2 large X-rays and a written print out. No charge.

Believe you mean a chest X-ray - a CT scan would be a video disc with print outs of relevant images and written report of findings.

But am no expert so perhaps they can render onto X-ray film for viewing?  I have always seen on computer screen or print outs however.  And two hospitals I have had procedure done provides video disc.

It has been several years since my last order but it was sent by mail (previously they had used courier service) and took a bit longer (believe 2 weeks).

I just checked and it is 6 X-ray type prints and a DVD. Plus the printed report findings.
