The Prince Royal's School is flooded Friday morning but the school is not closed.

CHIANG MAI: -- Overnight rains in Chiang Mai province caused flooding in the Muang district early Friday, prompting four schools to close for a day.

The four schools – Montfort College, Regina Coeli College, Sacred Heart School and Vachirawit Shchool – are located on Charoen Prathet Road.

The Prince Royal's School on Nawarat Road continued classes on Friday although the road was also flooded.

Several other roads were also under water. The Nimmanahemin Road was under 30cm high water. The road around the Khu Mueang canal and the road to Wing 41 were also flooded.

The Sri Ping Mueang and Kard Kom communities, which are the lowest areas in Chiang Mai downtown, were flooded with the water level varying from half a metre to over one metre.

The residents of the communities said the flash floods happened very quickly at around 2am.

Short, brief downpours usually lead to sections of road being flooded for a while.  They didn't mention Sirimangkalajarn road, but when Nimmanhamin is partially flooded, Siri is usually close to impassable.

I don't know if the drainage system is inadequate for the current level of development (more pavement and concrete means less ground to absorb water, so it ends up in the streets) of if the drains are not being properly maintained.  If it's inadequate infrastructure it will be difficult to fix.  If it's inadequate maintenance, it simply takes better government.

Kad Kom is well known for flooding. The drought of the last couple of years with low rainfall during the rainy season may explain why you have experienced no floods.
