The auto industry seems to think they'll be a big change by 2020 with the growing offerings from electric vehicle makers, so I thought it might be worth collecting a couple of motors.

Back in the UK, I owned a 1962 Hopkirk Mini, and a Citroen Saxo Tour De corse, that Citroen authorised a production of 20 in 1997, and a couple of years on.  A car that put Citroen back on the map.  Like the Ford Escort MK1 which you could buy back in 1997 for 200 quid, now commands a few grand for a decent one.  I've seen a few floating around here too  What do you reckon will become a future classic?  Prius, being the first mass-produced Hybrid motor (despite being as dull as a box of nails).  The old Toyota Fastbacks perhaps?  Of course, finding a cheap motor like a BMW 2002 or similar makes sense and I can only see the value going up on these.  But what about present motors over the last 10 years which are all pretty dull with the exception, in my opinion, the new Mazda 3?

They're all more or less homogeneous & dull......

It's going to have to be the departures or quick ones....

Like some of the Supra's have become....

Most of the rest - sedan-ish & serviceable are not stand out material whether a Benz or Hyundai ......

Could be an interesting topic - or could fold right away....

Early Evo's and special edition Impreza's are probably going to go into this collection. Like pgrahmn says, fast and short run models
All become a bit same same for my liking, no character....

Personally, I think something like a Saab 900 would be worth a shot.  Golf GTIs, although overpriced here should increase in value.  I don't know much about US cars but I do like some of the muscle motors of late,

For Asia - I reckon the future classics are:

Toyota Celica 2000 GT Liftback - the 'Ford Mustang' one

Nissan Skyline GT-R

Datsun 240Z

Honda S800

Original Honda HR-V

First Mazda MX-5

Subaru rally cars

GT liftback, the one I meant in the OP.  Nice looking car.

I am keeping my eyes out for a Honda N600.  Spotted one but the thing has been modded and he's asking 200k.

Saab 900 Turbo.  A very distinctive shape for its time, similar to the Ford Sierra which was quite futuristic and took some time to get used to.

Back in the UK, I nearly bought a Renault Alpine for a couple of grand 13 years ago.

Nothing wrong with the Princess.  My sister had an Austin Alegro.   Like the little sister of this rust bucket.

I rode in a prototype for those in the late 60's - think he said there were 2 in the states....

The one I was in had a red line of about 15,000 RPM....Driving it was weird because the engine was high reving but the landscape just kind of plodded on by.....It had a great sound to it on the inside....

It was a little/lot tight for my 6'4" - but I was more bendable then.....I've thought about that simple little yellow? car from time to time over the years.....Almost want to say it was chain driven.....

Think I had my 56 Chevy & barreled TR-3B then....Possibly the hemi Stude pick up....
