BANGKOK: -- The Communications Ministry has approved plans for the Mor Chit Bus Station to be relocated back to its original Pahonyothin Road site.

This will mean all operations of the National Bus Company will be on the site currently being used for repair and maintenance of BTS trains.

The bus station will comprise 100,000 square meters of the 60 rai plot that is being developed for commercial purposes.

Minister Phichit Akkarathit said that the move should occur by 2023 when the site has been redeveloped.

They have been saying this ever since the temporary move.  In six years, maybe, if they actually build the new building and ignore the gridlocked traffic.

Makes no sense to me - with expansion of public transport North of the city would expect much better to build new facility at end of that to lessen traffic and make use of the new BTS investments.

Pahonyothin Road is crazy busy even when I arrive at the BTS office at 6.30AM and only gets worse. Add to that the traffic generated by the "commercial development" and, of course, the buses, and we have a recipe for disaster.

It's just not going to work without improving access to the site which will be difficult without impinging on the park (which is of course on the wrong side of the road). Direct (elevated) bus access from the tollway perhaps.

Never understood why they moved it away from BTS & MRT stations in the first place. Add easy access to the expressway and there should be little impact on the traffic jam!!

It was originally moved to make way for the BTS depot, the intention being that it would return to the same location (on top of the depot) once things were completed.

The structure above the depot was never finished so the bus station never moved back.

So that's why there are still the rebars at the roof of the BTS depot?
I always guessed it looked kind of not finished

Stupid idea IMHO. Why not locate it at the Bang Sue complex to finally centralise public transport systems.
It would be at the meeting point of train lines, MRT (BTS not sure) and a stone throw away from Don Mueang.
Would also make sense in what I've read earlier that once the Bang Sue terminal is in Operation to close Hua Lamphong Station

stick it up in Rangsit and extend the BTS

Red Line is already going to Rangsit (opens 2019 ish)

Ideal location IF it's located near the station not on the far side of Future Park as was being suggested.

Dedicated bus lanes on the expressways and direct access between the bus station and the expressways.

For me living outside BKK that feels just ridiculous!
I have 7 hours by bus and to Rangsit and 7.5 hours to Mo Chit and its the same price to either place. So change to BTS should add another 30-40 min just to get to BTS Mo Chit station and then I don't know how much that ride would be. Or if you need to go downtown where it's no BTS then you would need to pay another 3-400 Baht for taxi.
But of course, for someone living in BKK, earning +100K Baht/month and never going by bus anywhere this might seem to be a good idea as you don't have to think about the extra travel time, inconveniences and extra costs for all those people traveling by bus.

The rebars are going rusty because nobody thinks to finish anything properly, for the usual reason.

The most classic example are the Hopewell pillars which have had exposed rebars since the 1980s.

In Pattaya, the Mike shopping mall has had exposed rebars since it was built. The useless management can't even put some sort of cover over them to tidy up the badly built building end.

Even in Auckland, New Zealand, they put the intercity bus terminal in the worst place possible, far away from city public transport and up steep hills.

Hopewell was never completed but exposed rebar used to be a tax dodge here as buildings did not attract tax until completed.

Isn't the BTS going there anyway? They are moving the main rail station up north, they should put the bus terminal there too.

Is that too logical to happen?

The bus depot is already there at Bang Sue Grand Station, but it will have to move to make way for the train washing plant.

This has been the plan for the last few years and indeed back in 2013 it was "promised" that it would happen within 2 years by 2015! (As all things in Thailand)

The MOT was going to move the Northern Bus Terminal to land near Zeer on Vihavadi-Rangsit rd and build a pedestrian link it to a station on the SRT Dark Red Line. That fell through for various and then the MOT looked at land at Muang Thiong Thani. However, the access in and out was problematic - even with the expressway there. The place is already a traffic jam most of the time.

Remember that the Eastern Terminal is being moved to a plot of land just east of the Bang Na-Trat rd - Sukhumvit intersection where that huge Bangkok Mall complex will be built.

I should mention that one previous idea once the land near Zeer fell though was to build two new terminals - separate North and North Eastern.

That may still happen as the MO Chit 1 site is obviously too congested and not appropriate.

Old Mor Chit bus terminal will be revived to accommodate long-haul buses

BANGKOK: -- The Transport Company has decided to return to its old bus terminal at Mor Chit which has been turned into the train maintenance centre of the BTS elevated rail system.

Deputy Transport Minister Pichit Akarathit said Wednesday that the long-haul bus service for destinations beyond 200 kilometres from Bangkok would be relocated from Mor Chit 2 bus terminal to the old Mor Chit bus terminal while the short-haul service for destinations within 200 kms from Bangkok would be moved to Bang Sue bus terminal which can accommodate up to a maximum of 600 buses.

The Bang Sue bus terminal will link up with high-speed train service, BMTA bus and taxi services.

Mr Pichit noted that it was important for all the buses to be relocated from Mor Chit 2 bus terminal otherwise the commercial development of Bang Sue centre would be problematic, causing serious traffic gridlock in the area.

Yes, moving further OUT from the city definitely makes more sense, since what is "out" keeps extending further and further.  They're doing the right thing moving Ekkamai to Bang Na.  And let's not even get into the reality, ignored by all in Thai government, that by 2040, a large portion of the city of Bangkok will need to be relocated, or end up underwater.

moving further OUT from the city ?  more sense is to have Bus stations where there is a direct BTS/MRT line, or it just means there are more cars/Taxi's and Mini Bus to get people to these stations.

The only solution is a bus station with it's own connection to city rail and a very good connection to outgoing roads.

It might help congestion on Thailand's roads if long distance rail transport would be promoted in every conceivable way.
