KHON KAEN: -- A member of the National Reform Steering Assembly (NRSA) has expressed concern over the presentation of the grisly murder of Khon Kaen bar girl by the mainstream and social media in a way which appeared to glorify one of the five suspects.

Before the NRSA went into its normal session on Monday, assemblyman Mr Chalermchai Krua-ngarm sought consultation with the presiding chair of the meeting, Ms Walairat Sri-aroon, about what he regarded as the media’s improper presentation of the news about the murder case in a way which appeared to glorify the conduct of one of the five suspects, Ms Preeyanut Nonewangchai.

He said some of the media tried to portray Ms Preeyanut as a grateful daughter for providing financial support to her family. He also cited social media’s report about a bag bought from the border by the suspect for her parents and netizens began asking where the bag was bought.

As a foreigner here, I still find it difficult to adjust to popular culture. Instead of horror and revulsion being heaped on suspects in serious criminal cases, people seem to expect a soap opera with explicit dramatic revelations, re enactments and press conferences, and common criminals treated like the highest people in society.

The police, instead of being the arbiters of common decency and justice, seem to revel in their part, preening and fawning, and revealing details of victims and suspects and the investigation, preventing any semblance of a fair trial. Let alone what part brown envelopes play in the final result of their labour.

Instead of play acting, it's about time they devoted their efforts to the Red Bull elite. Latest excuse, find out what country he is in before preparing extradition papers. No, prepare the papers for all the countries you know he visits, follow the Formula One calendar, use Embassy staff to confirm his location, then serve the papers and get him arrested and extradited.

I thought it was a soap opera, but it just turned into a comedy show.

So all the fun photos taken with the law enforcement officers were the media's fault??

Perhaps he should keep his thoughts to himself and let the police and prosecution determine what is relevant. His comments carry guilty undertones that might harm the suspect's rights.

Hasn't she already confessed?
