I had Lasik about 13 years ago.

I got dry eye syndrome.....a pain in the axse.......but the vision was of course much improved.

My eyes are now needing glasses again most of the time and a year or two it will be all the time I'm guessing

I know Lasik is improved now but I ask myself given how quick, cheap, and safe replacing lenses for cataracts is, why not do this instead of Lasik.

A friend had two eyes done for cataracts, one with regular lens (I think about 10k baht or less), the other with multifocal (which  was much dearer maybe 45k?)

For some reason he wishes he hadn't bothered with the multifocal.

Any educated advice about this?

......and do I have the prices right?.

thanks!

Unless you are talking about a government hospital the prices are way low if we are talking about the normal cataract removal and lens implant - believe my cost of 35k per eye normal lens is about the lowest I have seen for private hospitals (mine was at Vejthani several years ago).  There are more issues with multi focal (and for that reason they are not yet covered by any insurance that I know of) but many people are happy with them.  You can get a lot of information with google search. -

Thanks for reply

Will get my facts straight and ask friend about the price first.....it is after all a mere cut and replacement of lens, scalpel and tweezers, no expensive equipment whose leasing is I believe is the bulk of the lasik price .......leaving the question of medical advisability

There is a lens involved and that comes with a price (even for normal vision) and the size/shape of that lens is critical and must be measured prior to ordering using special optical biometry equipment.  Operation itself is normally in OR with support nurses and dedicated equipment and although it may only take 20 minutes there will be about equal time getting ready (after the hour or more dilation of eye) and then medications for several weeks and follow up check and tests.  The old lens must be shattered and removed and new lens is inserted folded to allow smaller slit so a bit more than a flat tire replacement.

Got you, more to it than meets the eye (no pun intended)

Solution: contact lenses. Can get multifocal & toric. Gad permeables last a long time, correct astigmatism, and can be multifocal as well. :)
