By The Nation

CHIANG MAI: -- Rescuers and local residents thwarted an apparent suicide attempt in Chiang Mai’s Mueang district early Wednesday when a dispondent man set his car on fire to explode its LPG fuel tank.

Police were called shortly after midnight when a man was seen sitting absentmindedly in his Mercedes car with the trunk of the vehicle on fire where the LPG fuel tank is located.

Initially, police were advised that a car had been involved in an accident and was on fire. But when police from Mueang Chiang Mai police station arrived at the scene, on Irrigation Canal road in Tambon Mae Hia, they found a car with flames coming from the trunk and a an unresponsive man sitting behind the wheel.

Rescuers and local residents put out the fire and got the man out of the car.

He was taken to Maharaj Nakhon Chiang Mai Hospital.

Pol Lt Col Boonrak Khampraphan, deputy commander of the Mueang Chiang Mai police station said the man apparently drove to the spot and set fire to the carpet in the trunk and waited for the LPG tank to explode.
