A typical postal address for someone living in "Pattaya" might be :-

xxx/xx Soi ABCDE

Moo xx

Nongprue

Banglamung

Chonburi 202xx

Thailand

Naka.

Depends on the map, doesn't it? I have four or five maps of Thailand, two guide books and each publication shows Pattaya. I seem to remember that the name of Pattaya is derived from the Thai for the strong south west monsoon winds that appear at the beginning of the rainy season.

Isn't Pattaya the actual name of MooBahn 10. It must be the biggest village in Thailand!

Most postal addresses don't include the village name, just Moo xyz

Because of the rapid expansion of this area, the Pattaya City Act was passed by the Thai Goverment in 1976, making Pattaya a self-administrating municipality governed by a city based council-manager.

No mention of Naklua or Jomtien either. The administrative area is called Banglamung which consists of three main sub-areas, Naklua, Pattaya and Jomtien (in N to S order). But, as I said, Pattaya was given autonomy as a self-administrating/governing municipality, going under the name of Pattaya City. In fact, the addresses within the "City" can be written, and accepted by the Postal Authority, as....(an example) Bangkok Bang PLC, Second Road, Pattaya City, Chonburi 20260.

Moo xx..........the number of the local area

Nongprue.......the name of the sub-district (Tambon)

Banglamung...the name of the administrative district (Amphur)

Chonburi.......the province (Jangwat)

202xx............the code for the postal area or even the local post office. For instance, the post office in Jomtien has a different number from that assigned to the main post office in Naklua

I too was curious about this.

I live on Buddha Hill with the address: Nongprue, Banglamung, Chonburi

When I receive registered mail I need to head all the way past Naklua to the Banglamung Post Office to pick it up.

Here's a question:

If I put Jomtien, or Pattaya City in my address would my mail be delivered to a different post office?

Not unless you included the post code for the local post office.

you can pick one up at Tropical Bert's (and possible many more places in Pattaya), it's a free map with advertisements and shows all the Moos in Pattaya...errmm.....Banglamung

I use 20260 as my postcode. It was provided by management where I live. Even they didn't know that mail would end up at Banglamung.

If I, for example, put a Chiang Mai postcode in my address, would I get a slip here in Pattaya asking me to pick up my registered mail in Chiang Mai?

easiest way to find out is send a letter to yourself... :o

The letters always end up at my address. It's the registered ones that require a signature at the post office I was curious about.

As far as I am aware there are two postcodes for the local area which are 20150 and 20260. I had always been under the impression that 20150 related to the Naklua/Banglamung main Post Office and 20260 related to the Pattaya one in Soi Post Office. If you're having to collect post from Banglamung with a 20260 code it sounds like things may have changed.

We always have to pick up registered mail at Banglamung office in Nakluea for both, private address which is 20150 and busines address which is 20260. Both is in Nongprue Sub-Dirstrict.

Still the main riddle remains unsolved...which part of Pattaya is Pattaya?

Trust me on this...your impressions are wrong. You will definitely be picking up registered mail in Banglamung with a 20260 code.

Thanks Raro, you've confirmed that Banglamung is probably the only post office in the area that handles regestered mail.

An interesting issue. I've always believed the following codes:

20260 Naklua Main Post & Sorting Office in Soi Sawang Fah (All registered post collected personally, or by authorised agent, from here only)

20150 Pattaya City Post Office in Soi Pisanee

20145 Jomtien Sub-Post Office in Soi 5, Jomtien Beach Road

It is between a Heaven :D or a H_LL :D of a place, to all that go there.

Hope this has answered your question “raro”. :D

I posted some parcels ( Not registered post) to myself when I came to Pattaya from the north. Because they could,nt be bothered to deliver them ( although you do pay for a delivery to the address, not the sorting office), I had to arrange to have them collected from Naklua. Post code on the address was 20150.

I sent one parcel by registered post and that was delivered to the actual address and signed for

I'm tempted to suggest that if you were to ask the average expat after the last few days’ revelry he/she wouldn't be able to tell you.

The reason you can't find it on the map very easily is that the main town in the area was historically Banglamung; though this has now been dwarfed by Pattaya, it is still the administrative and postal name for the area and appears in bigger type on most maps.

Addresses in Pattaya do not need to include the word Pattaya

Posted

Basically, just for MAIL purposes this should be enough:

xxx/xx = house number and maybe room number

Moo xx = number of the village (moo baan)

202xx = zipcode

Thailand = country

There is only 1 Thailand in the world, there is only 1 specific zipcode in Thailand, there is only 1 Moo xx in the zipcode area and there is only 1 xxx/xx in the mentioned Moo.

My 86 year old aunt always sends me XMas cards using this address and her cards are always delivered.

Using the Soi name, district and sub-district names is more for identification and delivery purposes.

By the way, if you happen to buy something in Pattaya and you want it to be delivered, they always ask you to draw a map.

Never had any troubles finding watering holes! If you're thirsty, just follow me! :D

Wish we chatted more on that evening, but as I said, Brits drive on the wrong side of the road and have an accent...most native speakers I deal with are from Western Canada, so my ear is finetuned to that sort of English...add the volume level in the BF and there you go... :D

The Thailand map that the street sellers sell all over the place has Pattaya and Banglamung both marked as equal adjacent towns.

I found this link on Wikipedia that mentions that Pattaya as well as Bangkok are outside the normal naming conventions for Thai towns/cities.

20250 is for Na-Jomtien, and the sorting office is at Baan Amphur.

But then again, Na-Jomtien is in Amphur Sattahip... not Banglamung.

I wonder where the dividing lines are...

Just in case someone wanted to know... :o
