HUA HIN: -- Some 500 long-tailed macaques from a 3,000-strong population at Khao Takieb and Suan Ling areas in Prachuap Khiri Khan's Hua Hin district are being lured into cages prior to moving them for sterilization.

Local residents complained of too many monkeys, and too much monkey-theft mischief. The monkeys are getting used to the cages and Pantainorasingh Wildlife Sanctuary officials before they will be shut into the cages and transported to the Hua Hin Dog Shelter for sterilization by veterinarians from the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation and from Mahidol University.

The macaques would be allowed some time to rest at the shelter before being released back into their home habitat. Officials hope the sterilization program will control the macaque population.

Don't they understand? The complaint from local people is that there are too many monkeys. By all means catch them and neuter them but release them elsewhere like Pala U . Presumably they are sterilizing male animals?

of perhaps a few may fall of from some high rise condos?:post-4641-1156693976:...or who knows, a sudden epidemic of monkey depression and many may be found handing on trees?...or maybe ship a few loads to the Chinese who eat anything...

I thought they were rather better behaved than many of the sexpats.

Now some of them could do with rounding up and being sterilized.

More effective to sterilise the females.

One overlooked male can father broods in hundreds of fertile females.

One overlooked female can only produce one brood at a time (about 1-2 years between broods) no matter how many fertile males are around.

It works for stray dogs and humans too.

Why are they doing this just for one lot of Monkeys and just in one place ? If they can do this they can put cages in every town and village and catch all the roaming soi dogs and exterminate them. This is a bigger problem than just in one place The Soi dog problem is in the Whole Country.

Small steps first, Mr Flust.

sterilizing the males does absolutely nothing!  One male can run around and boink all the ladies.  Animal population control in the wild in general depends on neutering the lady types.  It varies a bit depending on the mating habits and territorial nature and harem size of the species

They are not as tall as farangs, so they won't fall over the balcony railings as often.

Now where do you see that they are sterilizing the males and not the females?

If you want to refer to sterilizing females only, that's what spaying means, but I doubt that the copywriter was aware of this nuance.

I never said they were sterilizing the males and not the females.  You seem to be assuming that
