Wanlop Suwandee, chief adviser to Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Governor.

BANGKOK: -- Footpaths around the Victory Monument in Bangkok’s Koh Phaya Thai area have been cleared of street vendors obstructing movement.

Wanlop Suwandee, chief adviser to Bangkok Metropolitan Administration Governor Aswin Kwanmuang, on Tuesday evening presided at the opening of a “footpath-regulating centre”, the painting of traffic lines and the dispatch of more than 100 Tesakij law-enforcement officials on patrol.

Wanlop said the moves were necessary to “reclaim” the sidewalks for pedestrians and ease traffic congestion both in Koh Phaya Thai and on Rajavithi Road from Soi 5 to Soi 11.

Kerbside sales are already prohibited at all times from Rajavithi Soi 6 to Soi 8, but are allowed on other sections of the road within certain hours.

Wanlop said 132 vendors who had earlier sought leniency to continue operating in Koh Phaya Thai had agreed to instead move elsewhere, such as to Koh Din Daeng and Koh Phahol Yothin.

The vans are still there at the moment. Are they due to move?

Yet more junta-ordered, urban vandalism.  And what has happened to Siam Square since the coup should be a criminal offence. All the unique little independent fashion designers shops have been demolished and replaced by useless, ugly-as-sin shopping complexes (not even real malls), despite the fact that Siam Square is across the road from all the big malls.  No more Siam Radio playing there anymore either. It's like they are hell-bent and sucking all the atmosphere out of BKK.  Look at the flower market now as well... Shame.

Really? I haven't been down there in Siam Square (on the walk to MBK) since last year. So now they've destroyed that unique bit of Bangkok? The city just gets worse and worse. In fact, I just spent four nights in Bangkok, which was two too many.

I think I will just have to keep posting this....Very Smart People At The Top......

Why is it always all or nothing with these people? Yeah sure, reduce the number a bit to make it easier for pedestrians, but you don't have to eliminate everything that gives it life. There are so many parts of Bangkok that are completely dead now, particularly at night. Not the same Bangkok I fell in love with 30 years ago, that's for sure. Are there any members of the general public actually in favour of this policy? I doubt they even thought of bothering to ask.

pretty clear at this point that Bangkok will be Singapore-lite in another 5 years

Except they are too cack-handed to run it like Singapore, so it will be both boring AND dirty and ill-managed -the worst of both worlds.
