THAI blames outsourced worker for looting

By The Nation

Thai Airways International on Saturday blamed an outsourced airport worker for the alleged looting of a passenger’s bag.

THAI issued a statement in response to an online post from a passenger who said some valuables were stolen from a bag that had onboard Flight TG641 from Narita International Airport to Suvarnabhumi and then went on to a transit flight to Phuket on August 15.

The statement said the airline conducted an investigation promptly after it received full information from the passenger.

It said it checked CCTV footage at Suvarnabhumi and Phuket airports, and had spotted a worker behaving suspiciously.

The airline said it would ask the outsourcing company and police to immediately investigate the claims and interrogate the worker in question. It said it would inform the passenger of the outcome.

They "will inform the passenger of the outcome"  - meaning after they come up with a suitable excuse so as Thai Airways can not be held responsible !!!!

One of the management "rules" I learnt during a previous reincarnation was that you delegate the task but retain responsibility for the outcome. It is not, or shouldn't be, a way of avoiding responsibility, although the rule is often abused.

It's very disturbing how often we read of things being stolen by airport workers, especially at Suvarnabhumi. I am not reassured that later checking of CCTV has generally found the culprit. If someone can take something from a bag, they are quite capable of putting something in to the luggage too. It will be little consolation to see in hindsight how a bomb got on board. Clearly, security at Thai airports is woefully below where it needs to be.

It's not disturbing to me. I've been through the airport countless times without issue.

And so have I and all the rest of us. It only needs one occasion to ruin that perfect record though doesn't it? And it is not as though Thailand doesn't have problems with terrorism and bombings, or maybe you haven't been reading recent activity in the south. My point isn't necessarily that it will happen though, just that the poor security puts the airport in a position where it could, and if that doesn't worry you, it should.

Firs, TG should be ultimately responsibility for all mishapps under it's

control and supervisions no matter who have committed the infractions,

second, if you employ outsiders, they should be monitored at all times,

third, as a member already pointed out, it takes only one crazy loan wolf

a sympathizer of this or that cause to bring a fully loaded plane down,

do we really need a calamaty to happens before ' security will be stepped up '

headlines?....

agreed; is blame-shifting taught in school here ?

Outsourcing does not make a company any less responsible.  They still have an obligation.  It seems like some manager washed his hands of the vital segment of their service.

Have not been a fan of Thai Airways for a long time.  Back in the 90's they were good.

So I guess your saying you have total control over your check-in bags to the point where it's impossible for an incident to happen.

Is this the Sunday THAI bashing thread or what?

Contract staff pilfering airline passenger baggage happens all over the world. THAI have investigated and are following up. Nowhere have I seen it reported that THAI have claimed that it's not their problem.

(queue the THAI apologist posts)

I recall just a few months ago AOT announced it was cancelling all outsourced contract for this work and would henceforth establish their own direct workforce for this activity.

What happened?

another crime by an outsourced worker, I think the solution is to ban alcohol for all passengers on and before fights.

A reason more NOT to use Thai.

Their inflight service is terrible and provided by all those hiso-girlies who realize too late that it is nothing but a waitress job on 30'000 feet. Their ground personnel's attitude is absolutely unacceptable, unless you're a VIP and their handling of third-airline baggage has always sucked. I had to identify my intact luggage prior to loading next to the aircraft and upon delivery on the conveyor belt in Bangkok I was told that this was the fault of the loading station; well, I could not prove this and walked away with the damage ...........

And it's not the first incident either. I had things stolen from a side-pocket of my suitcase (most probably by Thai Airways staff) when I flew with them last month from Hong Kong to Suvarnabhumi. Nothing very valuable, but still... Plus, the bag was damaged, which I told them via email - I'm still waiting for an apology, well actually any reply from them. Thai Airways International - no thank you, never again!

Slip something into your luggage?

Quite possible, and happened before with disastrous results for the owner of the suitcase.

Life's too short, you can worry for both of us.

No, you made all that up. What I said was I'm not disturbed about it.

I could get hit by lightning on the way to the airport, but I'm not going to worry about it.

That said, I'm not going to wrap myself in aluminum foil and walk around in in a thunderstorm, and I'm not going to stuff the side pocket of my bag with cash and valuables.

As have I and more than likely countless others.

The occasional info planting of random incidents causes some to consider such issues as automatic commonplace.

Easiest solution is just to clingwrap your suitcases on short haul or long haul domestic or international flights. If you think the 200Baht fee is too expensive, how expensive is a jail term for drugs that you did not put in your suitcase?

Now you beginning to see the very real dangers of having someone put something into your suitcase without your knowledge.

Think before you travel, it could just save your life. Yes this is a very, very serious matter.

Wake up airport authorities and security personel.
