PHETCHABURI, 25 August 2017 (NNT) - Phetchaburi Rajabhat University has joined health organizations in promoting alcohol abstinence in students.

The campaign was co-organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, the StopDrink Network and the Thai Health Promotion Foundation. The event kicked off at Phetchaburi Rajabhat University and was presided over by Deputy Permanent Secretary for Agriculture and Cooperatives Thanit Anekwit.

The goal was to encourage healthy habits among students of nine educational institutes in nine provinces. The 2017 Southeast Asian Games was chosen as the launch date, given the association between sporting events and celebrations involving alcohol consumption.

A nationwide survey by the Department of Disease Control showed that liquor consumption in teenagers ages 15 - 19 has jumped 64.5 percent over the past 13 years, an average rise of 4.96 percent per year. In Phetchaburi province, the rate of risk behavior associated with underage drinkers is still considered high, despite dropping to 4.61 percent in 2016 from 5.49 percent in 2015.

The Ministry of Education has issued measures ordering all educational institutes to be alcohol and cigarette-free zones.

Years ago a few mates and I used to disappear to the pub at lunchtimes for a couple of pints before afternoon class. This started when we were fifteen.

One memorable session we even bumped into our Geography teacher who was cool enough not to turn us in for buying him a couple of rounds.

Rajabhat Uni where I teach in an area not far from Petchaburi the students are already heavily into drinking..

most say they are constantly broke but seem to find enough money to go out at 11pm until 2/3am and get completely smashed most nights.

Go to any bar/pub near the Uni and the majority of customers are students..

Best way to ensure young people drink even more..Let em get a hangover early , and they soon go back to a Sprite or Lifetime Moderation. ?[emoji481]
