BANGKOK: -- Two Chinese tourists were seriously injured when a man attacked them with a knife in a case of attempted robbery in Samut Prakan province early Thursday.

The incident in the Bang Bo district was reported at around 00.30am following which rescue workers rushed to the scene in front of an apartment building on Bangna Garden Road in Tambon Bang Bo.

They provided first aid to the seriously injured tourists. Liu Zhou, 27, sustained a knife wound on his forehead, and Xia Yang, 28, had a knife wound in the back of her right ear. The injured tourists were then moved to Ruamchai Pracharak Hospital.

The two tourists said they were walking back to their hotel room when the assailant on a bicycle approached from behind, attacked them with a knife and tried to snatch the woman's handbag. During the brief struggle, the headlights of an approaching car made the assailant let go and flee empty-handed.

Police suspect the culprit is lying low in the area near the scene of the crime.

It's a matter of time the Chinese president will put this security issue in the agenda.

Probably just a short time before he takes on the Thai debt and deficit as he takes over the country on behalf of the People's Republic!

why the Chinese govt. is not giving a Travel Warning for Thailand. Maybe Thais would wake up and tidy up their country, meaning make it safe for tourists including road safety

Two articles one says a man and a woman the other claims two women were attacked.

Fact checking and proof reading are definitely things of the past in modern reporting

Why would they be attacked if they did not do anything wrong.

I wonder.

Usual reason. The thief thinks he is entitled to free money and someone has to pay. In this case it was the two unlucky Chinese tourists that were the pick of the day.

Well the thief is entitled to steal unattended money but in this case we don't see such a thing.

Wow, innocent Chinese tourists and their nationality seem to be getting it in the ear here on TV.

The real problem is a high level of opportunistic thievery we are getting in the country.

Why would a tourist holiday in that area?

There's a suggestion they were "dumped" there by the taxi driver.  There's even a suggestion that he might've been in cahoots with the robber.

first answer that comes to my mind is 'visiting' Thailand is wrong. Certainly if you are one of these two ; then visiting Thailand is 'iffy'.

You know, that is exactly what worries me. To be knifed in order to make it easier to grab the bags is very bad. Ordinarily its just a snatch and grab. If you use a weapon the idea is to frighten your victims into handing over their bags. To knife and then rob is a robbery method that will quickly cost tourism its golden egg.

Victims at fault again? A sub-set of the values that discourage respect for women in a rape mindset.

I note most general anti-Yingluck grovellors for the military coup authorities use expressions that couldn't be better designed to alienate females in Thai society - often enough as their first line of attack in their post comments.

It doesn't do much to inform any worthwhile debate, more of a distraction.

The report in the OP referred to the assailant's use of 'long' knives: was that a coy reference to the short stabbing swords like an ornate Bowie knife on steroids now favoured by many gangsters? Scary implications that need a crackdown.
