webfact Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Chiang Mai souvenir shop raided for selling illegal substances to Chinese tours Picture: Daily News CHIANG MAI: -- Pharmaceutical experts and police raided a recently opened souvenir shop in Chiang Mai yesterday. They had received reports that the "Time Cosmetic" store on Ratchiang Saen Road was selling illegal goods to tourists. The raiding party found five varieties of medicine that can only be dispensed by a qualified pharmacist. Several people were arrested including the manager. A saleswoman called Supranee Sasithornbamrung, 24, said they had only been open a week. She didn't know anything about it - her job was just to sell the stuff to the Chinese, she said. LannaGuy Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Things really have changed. Presumably the Pharmacist was in the toilet but what's the difference? 10 years here and the Pharmacist just hands it over anyway!
Maejo Man Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 I have noticed more of these shops opening around town. I went into one on Moonmuang and the staff there were speaking in Chinese, but were Thai. Seems they are just geared to Chinese tourists.
cmsally Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Even though the numbers of Chinese tourists have slacked off a bit, these stores are still popping up everywhere. I don't see the foot traffic in them as being enough to justify some of the expensive locations they are renting. Seriously can someone shift huge quantities of snail cream and durian chips on an ongoing basis.
Foozool Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Illegal substances ? ? What could be those ?

There's a scam but what is it? money laundering?
cmsally Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 I understand from that the Chinese govt has cracked down in the past couple of years regarding transferring large amounts of cash outside China. Could this be a way to get around money transfer regulations. All the money you transfer is in effect a purchase of pillows and stuff, vastly inflated invoices etc . Just an idea as I can't figure it out. Or maybe there is just a huge demand for latex pillows and snail cream !
