Udon Thani Bar closing hours.

Took a trip to Udon Thani city with friends and family.

We went out for some beers and drinks after dinner, and we found an area with many beer bars near Centara Hotel.

But would you not believe it, they all started to close down around midnight.

At approx 1 am the Police showed up to force them to close.

Is this the Udon official closing hours?

It is fine, I found out.

Indeed this sleepy city send its citizens to bed as early as possible.

A couple of places open after midnight.

Hardly the city which never sleeps.

The true place where old elephants go to, before they die.

I don't think it claims to be the city that never sleeps. There are some Thai discos that open late, one opposite the Centara but any ferang type bars are all closed at midnight. Pretty much the same as any other city in Isaan

My second post was a bit Trollish, I admit that.

But, yes except for a couple of "nightclubs" it is amazing how quiet a Saturday night could be.

Of course, if one need a few hours out when socializing in Udon Thani, one should go out earlier in the evening.

Udon has long been regarded as a no-nonsense sort of place and even the local 'hostess' clubs generally don't live long as I guess they are harassed relentlessly on hours, staff and the like. For example, hostesses cannot sit beside customers, only bend over or squat to chat. On the farang bar scene, there's been frequent, usually short-term restrictions on closing hours but some of the regulars reckon this latest clampdown, supported twice by written notices, seems a bit more intense.

However, the biggest thing at the moment is the recent imposition of afternoon bans on the 'farang alley' bars serving alcohol between 2 PM and 5 PM. One establishment had a daytime visit by the constabulary where they were advised that the afternoon bans would come into effect 'next week'. Then they came back the very same evening and armed with the photographic evidence of their afternoon visit showing customers drinking, they busted the place and fined the owner.

By the same token, the biggest dance club for locals on the same block as the curfewed bars for foreigners remains open until well after 2 AM and never, ever gets harassed. The club ownership is probably a great enabler.

I went over to Surin a couple of years ago to buy a bike, could not really find anywhere for a few beers??

Has it changed recently?

The bar area is on Soi Kola at GPS 14.8875187594, 103.499611321which is about 400 meters east of the bus station. The old bar seen area that you may go through is all but extent. Soi Kola is on the north side Of Speed 3. Its wall to wall bars. Its become a franchise of SinCity with all that entails.:partytime2:
