Two tourists were rushed to hospital after a fire ripped through bars in Pattaya’s Walking Street.

Scores of expats and tourists fled in terror after explosions were heard around 10.30pm on Saturday night.

Bar girls could be seen running to safety as the fire quickly spread from the Marine Disco to neighbouring bars and properties.

Tourists reported seeing sparks fly followed by a series of large explosions as an electrical box and motorcycles also caught fire.

Sophon TV reported that medical staff and fire crews were on the scene within minutes and the fire was eventually brought under control after half an hour.

Officials have promised a full investigation into the fire, which is suspected to be caused by a faulty electrical transformer.

Damage was estimated to be between 5-10 million baht, officials said.

Those  requiring medical treatment were taken to Pattaya Memorial Hospital where they treated for burns and smoke inhalation.

not the first time they have had a fire ,  //

Who "they" ? It's the first time I hear of a fire in this area, SMK Plaza beer bar complex

BTW despite what ThaiVisa titled, the fire was NOT on Walking Street, but about 200m East in the narrow Soi 16.

Tourists on Walking Street probably didn't even noticed the fire, except maybe for the strident noise of firemen trucks sirens...

I see the pattaya defenders are out in force.  It's like when you buy rubbish car and then spend years trying to justify your decision..

Yes, but I am expecting more detractors to be out in more of a force... after all nothing like this type of incident to give them cause to comment and gloat.

Dodgy and overloaded electrics, limited safety measures and death traps are nation-wide. The tally sounds very limited, with only 2 reported injuries.

Perhaps the services did a good job, and I bet Walking Street will be brightly lit tonight.

not the first time they have had a fire , sorry for the injured, but a good start to clearing the rest of this rabbit warren of a place, and putting something nice in its place after reclaiming the beach.

Here's a thought. How about putting decent transformers in place and leave the rest as it is. The beach being an exception.

Judging by the videos and photos, it is quite amazing that only two tourists were hospitalized; well done to the people (fire-fighters, etc.) managing the situation!

It is a sad event as I understand that Pattaya already is slowing down a bit; this will make things worse. Whether you like it or not, 'Walking Street' in known internationally and a sure tourist draw.

Hang in there, Pattaya!

If there was a report of a chip pan fire in the West End of London, do you think it would have a seriously detrimental effect on visitor numbers? No, it wouldn't and the very minor incident here in Pattaya is not going to deter people from coming either.

Tourist numbers to Pattaya and other Thai resorts are on the increase year on year. Those that want to see Pattaya fail need to hang their hats on something far more substantive than this near non-event.

The fire was caused by a transformer. Thailand is famous for transformers.

Transformers!

Men in disguise!

Transformers!

More than meets the eye!
