Thai eating habits

Have you sat at a restaurant table as a guest of Thai people who have ordered the food . The food arrives often in a large bowl or platter . The Thai people then launch into the food with their own spoon then into their mouths and back into the food repeatedly . I made my excuses and did not join in . What would you do ?  Have seen similar happenings where a solitary cup is next to a water jug or dispenser  and all drink from the one cup . Would you accept this and use the cup ?

Normally there is a spoon to dispense the stuff to the person's bowl.  Double dipping?? they don't care. And nor do I because I will not  eat insects and chicken's feet and stuff a western dog would turn it nose up at.

My love affair  with this nation is coming to a close.

It must be more than jingreets and bplah rah that is causing your discontent ?

Forest man, I don't know what you mean.  I need to get away from village life for a while

As to the multi-dipping, not something I've observed amongst my Thai family, friends and associates. There are certainly occasions when someone uses their own spoon to shift food from the platter to their plate (I've done it too) but the only occasions I've noted platter to mouth is when it's the last mouthfull on the platter.

In reality, the risk is pretty low, we all tend to have the same bugs in residence although there are some nasties that live in the mouth (think typhoid, plagues of various types and others).

I would be more concerned as to what's going on behind the scenes in the kitchen.

Does not bother me for every one at the table to eat the soup with their own spoon dipping and eating. When the wife and I are out we just push the separate soup bowls to the side or have them removed from the table. We simply share the big bowl of soup.

Double or multi dipping is not a concern for me. Could care less..

otoh several of my female acquaintances also share their oral treat

on other occasions so it evens out, i can sit out a dish for the greater good

I have seen it done. Does not bother me one jot, its not the most hygienic if you are being ultra fussy, but personally i just get stuck into the food. Not sure exactly what anyone expects to catch.

Obviously if someone was openly sick i would be more reticent, but cannot see the point of getting precious about that type of thing.

I'm just grateful I have something to eat and somebody to share it with. I know there are millions of people around the world who have nothing to eat or have to eat alone.

Generally speaking I don't mind eating from the same plate, food shared in good company usually tastes better.

Well here's a tale regarding hygiene.

In 2004 I took my now TW to India, Kolkota Calcutta??, appalled she was by the filth, did the full tourist bit, Taj Mahal etc.  So, she goes back to Thailand and me to England where I felt very ill.   Doc said you've got hepatitis, more yellow than Homer Simpson. My hepA jab was up to date and B and C was a death sentence then, so a bit scary .

Turns out I had hepE, endemic to India and acute, not chronic.  Passed on by the famous shit on fingers method.

It lasted 5 months, I was weak and sick, tired so I had to take a nap midday,  I lost 10kilo, bones sticking of me.

You are big and tough, so was I, but my advice is to take hygiene seriously.

Sorry but It's just the way Thais eat. I attend parties all the time and you have to just go with it or go hungry. You just need to keep hold of your own spoon. For me the one exception would be picking up something like a chicken drumstick, pulling a piece of meat off with their fingers and then putting the chicken back on the serving plate. I see this all the time and have never been able to accept it.

I’m not grossed out by spoons in the communal bowl.

What I was shocked by paying for Pizza to see the Thais scrape off all the tomato sauce and toppings, then cover the pizza crust with ketchup and chili sauce to eat

What made you think that? I had an ex who had hep c probably caught in India many years before (certainly long before 2004) and as far as I know she is alive and very well today........

yew ever see a bunch of malays/indonesians eating together? it's a riot as they hook the food down with their hands, chew vigorously and then let the contents fall back onto their plates...

I said: 'say there, Mr suryobati...yew trine to lose weight?'

I waited until later and then got me a burger...

Purpose ?  was to ask others if they accept the multi spoon/fork food to mouth and back to plate etc . I thought that the question was clear .  As for being raciest , please qualify that statement .

Finally are you aware of the diseases that can be transmitted by saliva ?

I don't mix with Thais, apart from my direct family, and anything they have I probably have already.

I for one am not aware of the diseases that can be transmitted by saliva. Swapped spit with literally thousands of women. Imagine what was possible for me to have caught from kissing their private areas.

At my age I no longer care either. In my last few years I will eat whatever how ever. made it a point to not worry anymore,if eating something can effect me long term or on the short term.I only have short term of life left.,

When i hit 65 I told myself that is long enough to be concerned about health issues. Let the grim reaper come to my door life has been lived.Time to live with out worries or cares. So now little things like double dipping are so far removed from being a concern they are not even noticed.

Hepatitis and TB.

I'm not bothered by sudden death either, but don't want to spend my remaining years coping with chronic illness.

Really... so you never kiss anybody then?

And its raciest as this topic is solely about making fun of Thai eating habits.

Thais aren't a single race, so it isn't racist.

(33% Laos, 33% Siam, and the other 34% from assorted other races)

Probably they do as they seem to so everything opposite to the rest of Europe.

They like breaking up the food into tiny bits.. like when feeding a baby, then only using a fork (they don't see able to know how to use a knife) to eat the meal.  The leave the dirty knife laying on the table or side of the plate while switching the fork back and forth from right to left hand.

With the fork they then poke at and stir the contents of the meal around and around on the plate, usually waving the fork (with food attacked) around in the air while they are shouting their conversation across the restaurant for all to hear.  They like to laugh loudly with open mouths full of food while at the table.

The they will be still taking (usually about themselves.. 'I was like, she was like, so I though it was like, and like like like..me me me.. I did this, I did that, like....awesome!!'  while shoveling it into their mouth at the same time, and still speaking with mouth full of food.. with lots falling form their open mouths.

They will at some point usually start blowing their nose into a tissue in public and the dinner table.

They usually like to have a few bottles of beer with their food to... even breakfast or lunch it seems, instead of water or some other drink.  They will even drink it from the bottle and not use a glass.

They will pile huge bits of food onto their fork and then shove the fork and food right into their mouths.  Thais would consider putting the fork into your mouth as rude.  Here it's prober to use the fork to put the food onto the spoon.

I have even seem Americans here trying to eat a pizza with a fork and SPOON!!!  But maybe that is a step up from their usual way to pick up and eat pizza and burgers, etc WITH THEIR HANDS!!!  Again I suspect it's because of the not knowing how to use a knife and fork properly.

So before you go poking fun and putting down Thai people for they way they eat.. take a look at your own eating habits.

To those who sneer at the warnings of hygiene I will just say "do you have 6 months to spare, in pain, discomfort and fatigue, awful fatigue."  No interest in sex, your liver controls more than you imagine.  If you are topside of 65 you don't have the time to spare.   HepA and E are no joke.  Hep B and C can now be controlled, like HIV, by anti virals produced since 2004.  It's your choice.

You are extreme in your opinions, aren't you. I am not a doom monger but I've experienced the downside of poor hygiene. If you want chronic illness,   it's your right.
