BANGKOK, 17 April 2018 (NNT) - Thailand's Ministry of Tourism and Sports has revealed that the country's tourism revenue generated during Songkran holidays was higher than the previous estimate of 20 billion baht.

Tourism and Sports Minister, Weerasak Kowsurat, said he was pleased to learn that Thailand earned more than 20 billion baht from tourism during the Songkran Festival.

He added 20% of that money came from the sale of traditional Thai clothes, which have recently increased in popularity, while room reservations in secondary cities increased by 60%.

In addition, 15% more Thais traveled domestically during this period. Tourist complaints also declined.

The minister praised the organizers of Songkran celebrations in the Deep South, saying more people came out to join activities compared to previous years.

Just what's needed to deflect the horror statistics from the Ministry of Transport. sixty three dead each day with one day remaining........Spin that!

Certainly encouraging. Wonderful news for Thailand and its memorial flower industry.

Love to play with numbers....

20.000.000.000 baht spent by 70.000.000 people = 285 baht/person.........6 days= 48 baht person/day...

Not really that impressive....:coffee1:

So each person on an average spent 57 baht on costumes (20 % of 285)......

Those numbers indicates that a very big percentage of the population is excluded.....(Which of course is according to plan)

I was looking at the figures for 200,000 drunk drivers at 1,000 baht a head fine. You do the calculations.

200,000,000 more in the pot.

And two more days to go.

How on earth did they collect these statistics so soon after songkran??

This is more ridiculous self-gratifying BS.

Yes. You would need a nationwide survey to have any idea about who spent how much. I also fear the damages, the clean-up and the hospital costs would negate any profits.

They're a joke!

Impossible to reconcile any real figure of financial benefit......

Not too many hotels would report their occupancy rates....booking sites may have some idea, but never accurate..

350+ killed on the roads...many Thai tourists.....

So that many tourists during Song Khan holidays? WOW. Now that is impressive.

What is really impressive, (in fact unbelievably impressive) is that the data crunching branch of TAT is able to produce these statistics (rounded up to the nearest% to ease publication no doubt) within 24 hours of the holiday!

The minister has every right to look so smug!

His leadership must be phenomenal, to inspire his staff to such efforts.

Perhaps his brief should be widened to include road safety?

Full marks for brown nosing, 20% of that money came from the sale of traditional Thai clothes. What a load of b?llocks. This new minister is more creative with the porky pies than the previous incumbent, and that's hard to believe given some of the stats she used to throw around. Buffoons, the lot of them...

Tourism revenue more than 20 billion baht during Songkran holidays

Quote TAT NEWS.org about 2017 Songkran revenue:

"Songkran 2017 spurred over 45 billion Baht in spending in Thailand

April 19, 2017

Bangkok, 19 April, 2017 – Thailand’s Ministry of Tourism and Sports says the total economic impact of spending during the Songkran 2017 holiday was 45.428 billion Baht (US$1.3 billion*), representing a 14.40 per cent increase over the same period last year. In addition, several destinations nationwide were reportedly recording noticeable tourism growth during the Thai New Year period.

During the Songkran 2017 holiday period from 11-17 April, Thailand attracted 695,894 international tourists and generated about 36.941 billion Baht (US$1 billion), up 10.9 per cent and 16.40 per cent, respectively. Meanwhile, domestic tourism resulted in 3.03 million trips and 8.487 billion Baht (US$242 million) revenue up 3.36 per cent and 6.45 per cent, respectively..."

Statistical numbers are always relative. If the 2017 Songkran revenue was between 36 and 45 billion Baht, isn't a revenue of 20 billion baht, technically, a decline??

Quote Reuters, April 12, 2016 about projected 2016 Songkran revenue:

"Thailand sees tourism revenue rising 10 pct during Songkran festival

BANGKOK, April 12 (Reuters) - Thailand expects tourism to generate revenues of 15 billion baht ($428.08 million) during the three-day Songkran festival, some 10 percent more than last year, the country’s tourism minister said on the eve of the water festival.

Sometimes referred to as the world’s biggest water fight, the festival marks the beginning of Thailand’s traditional New Year and is a major tourist attraction, and a time when Thais visit family and perform religious purification ceremonies.

Tourism Minister Kobkarn Wattanavrangkul said 495,000 foreign tourists will visit Thailand during the festival, which starts on Wednesday and ends on Friday.

'About 15 billion baht ($428.08 million) will circulate during Songkran,” Kobkarn told reporters. “This is around 10 percent more than last year.' "

Someone correct me, if I'm wrong, but wasn't this year's Songkran a bit longer than just 3 days, i.e. 5 days (12th to 16th of April)?

So, if the projected income for 3 days Songkran in 2016 was 15 billion baht, but the actual revenue for 5 days Songkran in 2018 was 20 billion baht, is that an increase to be proud of? And, if 20% of the revenue in 2018 was thanks to traditional Thai clothes, what does that tell one about expenditure on other goods and services?

Whoa, Weerasak Kowsurat is a fast boy, isn't he. Songkran is not even over in some parts and he has the figures on his table already.

Reminds me of the smoke-screening preceeding lady Kobkarn who also had her thing with figures virtually going off the chart as business and arrivals were that high ...

How do they know these figures when the Songkran festivities don't end until the 20th?

How is that even possible to put the figure of 20 billion to that?
