American attacks Thai at Bangkok airport "because his flight was cancelled"

Footage from Suvarnabhumi airport showed a large American man attack a Thai hotel employee in full view of the cameras.

Rodney Philips, 49, wrestled Surasak, 48, to the ground then drove his head into the concourse.

Neither man knew each other or had any issue with each other.

Surasak, an employee who waits for arrivals with a board, was aided at the scene by security who saw him to hospital where he was treated for a broken arm.

The seemingly motiveless attack happened near exit 7 on the second floor of the airport in the early hours of Sunday morning. Philips fled the scene.

But police soon had Philips in custody and he has admitted attacking Surasak.

On Tuesday the American tried to buy his way out of the rap by offering full compensation payments to the victim. Surasak said no, and wants him prosecuted to the full extent of the law for what he did.

Surasak told Sanook that he had never met the American before and had no idea who he was and why he attacked him.

He said he had been waiting for a guest but had some business outside the airport and momentarily left his board hanging on a rail. When he returned other workers doing the same thing said the board had been removed by a foreigner and pointed out the man to him.

He asked for his sign back but that was refused as the American started causing more trouble. Then the American attacked him wrestling him to the ground and was seen on the cameras banging his head into the concrete.

Philips admitted that it was him on the CCTV. He said he was suffering from an illness and lost his temper when he found out his flight had been cancelled. He told the police that he didn't know what he was doing.

Surasak said in Thai on a later video that he thought the American must be on some kind of drugs.

Philips has been charged with assault and will soon appear in court, reported Sanook.

I am an American and I say throw him in Thai prison for 90 days after paying full compensation and talking to the nice Muslim lady for 24 hours.

Next case.

LOL> do you think such an assault will only get him 90 days in prison?

That, I suspect, is no longer the case.

Never let a crisis go to waste. The Thai was touching him in the chest which is technically an assault so I would argue self defense which this Farang is NOT doing. Stupid ****, No ? The Thai can negotiate the highest restitution payout at this point of proceedings, Sure ... !

They will be able to negotiate a settlement in court too. The amount is not restricted at any point.

Complete idiot, the farang. Lucky he did not crack the skull of the Thai. The Thai should be compensated AND the idiot should be locked up for a few weeks.

Weeks? 1 year and a 10 year blacklisting more suitable.

Something not right here. As they are both in the  Arrivals area, it could be that the flight he was waiting for had been cancelled!
