American attacks Thai at Bangkok airport "because his flight was cancelled"

US.jpg

Footage from Suvarnabhumi airport showed a large American man attack a Thai hotel employee in full view of the cameras.

Rodney Philips, 49, wrestled Surasak, 48, to the ground then drove his head into the concourse.

Neither man knew each other or had any issue with each other.

Surasak, an employee who waits for arrivals with a board, was aided at the scene by security who saw him to hospital where he was treated for a broken arm.

The seemingly motiveless attack happened near exit 7 on the second floor of the airport in the early hours of Sunday morning. Philips fled the scene.

But police soon had Philips in custody and he has admitted attacking Surasak.

On Tuesday the American tried to buy his way out of the rap by offering full compensation payments to the victim. Surasak said no, and wants him prosecuted to the full extent of the law for what he did.

Surasak told Sanook that he had never met the American before and had no idea who he was and why he attacked him.

He said he had been waiting for a guest but had some business outside the airport and momentarily left his board hanging on a rail. When he returned other workers doing the same thing said the board had been removed by a foreigner and pointed out the man to him.

He asked for his sign back but that was refused as the American started causing more trouble. Then the American attacked him wrestling him to the ground and was seen on the cameras banging his head into the concrete.

Philips admitted that it was him on the CCTV. He said he was suffering from an illness and lost his temper when he found out his flight had been cancelled. He told the police that he didn't know what he was doing.

Surasak said in Thai on a later video that he thought the American must be on some kind of drugs.

Philips has been charged with assault and will soon appear in court, reported Sanook.

hmm. I was tempted to comment that the american was a nutcase, but in the video you see the Thai put his fist on the american's chest, looks like he is trying to teach the guy a lesson.

difficult to say if this attack was provoked or not.

I am an American and I say throw him in Thai prison for 90 days after paying full compensation and talking to the nice Muslim lady for 24 hours.

Next case.

There is a guy on forums who is impersonating a Judge , what should his sentence be ?

Broken arm - ouch.  That's going to make the repercussions more severe methinks

It sounds like the airport needs some safe zone/comfort rooms for offended and stressed people. Maybe equipped with cuddly toys and anger management dolls.

Never let a crisis go to waste. The Thai was touching him in the chest which is technically an assault so I would argue self defense which this Farang is NOT doing. Stupid ****, No ? The Thai can negotiate the highest restitution payout at this point of proceedings, Sure ... !

This idiot wouldn’t do this in his country! You people are way to generous make him pat compensation and give him 2 years without early release. He is obviously a. NUT that should be taking off the streets

LOL> do you think such an assault will only get him 90 days in prison?

That, I suspect, is no longer the case.

They will be able to negotiate a settlement in court too. The amount is not restricted at any point.

Why wouldn't he do this in his own country? In most countries, if a person does what the Surasak did here (push a stranger in the chest), they risk a beating. If it was me I might have just pushed him aside, but if you do that to the wrong person you could cop a beating, anywhere.

They do it, seemingly every day

I saw that too. The statement alleged to have been from the American is uncorroborated. I believe there is more to this event. The hotel touts can be aggressive.

The hotel touts are so aggressive rather deserve a beating with broken bones. Yes. Right.

Weeks? 1 year and a 10 year blacklisting more suitable.

Maybe because you were pushing your hand into his chest, as if to block him from going someplace?

Can the American claim 'Break-Failure' ????

OK, so there was possibly some provocation, but the American significantly over-reacted.

I hope he receives a similar charge/penalty that a Thai would under similar circumstances.

I am pleased to see that the TVF Mental Health Assessment Team have manage to make a full diagnosis of the individual concerned, from a few seconds of video.

Additionally they have recommended a course of treatment, incarceration for up to 10 years.

Well done chaps, you are so astute.

I hope that you all never suffer from mental illness, for you may find yourself in gaol, instead of getting appropriate treatment.

Something not right here. As they are both in the  Arrivals area, it could be that the flight he was waiting for had been cancelled!

Headline: VIDEO: American attacks Thai at Bangkok airport "because his flight was cancelled" .You seem to be clever.

I wonder why they cut off the beginning. Why does the video start with the Thai man having his fist on the foreigners chest? What happened before?
