Three dead in Chon Buri car-truck collision

A 18-wheel container truck crashed into the rear of a NGV-fuelled car on Sunday afternoon, resulting in an inferno that killed three people onboard the sedan in Chon Buri’s Phanat Nikhom district on Sunday afternoon.
 

Following reports of the fatal crash at 12.30pm, Pol Captain Weerathep Thepchanthada led fellow officers and rescue workers to the scene on the Highway No 331’s Pattaya-inbound lane in Tambon Sa Siliam. 

 

They found the black Honda Civic car still on fire and stuck to the 18-wheeler, and the car’s three occupants dead. The deceased driver was identified as Sureeporn Thamthong, 65, while the other bodies were of an unnamed woman and a female toddler.

 

 

Truck driver Songkran Naree, 45, who surrendered to police at the scene, said he was driving from Chon Buri to Kabin Buri when he dozed off behind the wheel, sending the truck crashing violently into the sedan’s rear. The impact led to the explosion of an NGV tank in the sedan’s rear. 

 

Songkran said he tried to put out the flames using the truck’s fire extinguisher, but it wasn’t enough. Police initially charged Songkran with reckless driving causing others’ deaths.

He fell asleep basically rear ended the Honda, the front of truck and back of Honda was basically fused together.

I use this highway many time going back to Khon Kaen after visiting Pattaya with the wife. I am very vigilant. The trucks go so fast and have no regard for others. I have seen them drift over the lanes like the drivers are falling asleep. It is a deadly highway.

They must see some horrific accidents In Thailand. Death Death everywhere. Makes me sick reading about these accidents. Worse thing that ever happened to happened Thai people was that they let them drive cars and trucks. Should of stuck with the elephants

The problem I find with these main highways throughout Thailand is the lack of convenient rest places, okay fine, I know that there are service stations all over the place but on a lot of the major routes they are few and far between, what is needed are regular places to pull over and have a rest if needed, they don't need to have toilets etc just layby's whereby drivers, particularly truck drivers, can pull in and have a kip.

 

Having traveled extensively by road in Thailand I have been on some lovely routes with fantastic views and photo ops but nowhere to stop, and it's not as though they don't have the space, look at the motorway from Swampy to Pattaya, there are plenty of areas, marked as emergency parking ?? every few kilometers these should be built into every new motorway and maybe add laybys in the middle of nowhere on the other more rural routes.

 

Take a look at the European model, plenty of rest and picnic areas provided for travelers, tourists & professional drivers.

Therein lies the problem. Thais have no interest in learning from the experience of others, especially foreigners. Once or twice they've brought in experts - traffic management for Bangkok was one - and they've always rejected every suggestion that was made.

Well he won't know as he was asleep.dont take a lot of speed in a truck to flatten a small car and cause this accident.i bet the gas going bang might of woke him up though.

So, your solution is to leave it like it is? If drivers that are about to fall asleep stop by the roadside, there will not be any that are half asleep.

Many drivers of large Trucks drive dangerously on all of Thailand's roads.   Yesterday i made a 130 klick return journey on 108 and was , quite frankly, 'harassed' by more than one of those large tippers with trailers that carry aggregates around all going like bats out of hell.   In one instance, one of them was tailgating me in a built up area with 40kph speed limit after catching me up while he was doing in excess of double the limit.  He was no more than half a metre from my rear bumper for 2 klicks deliberately trying to push me along or make me pull over in an area where it was impossible because of parked cars.  Eventually i let him go and surprise surprise, another two of his mates were chasing him in the same way, no doubt thinking what fun they were having.

 

Last night i showed the footage from my onboard camera to the local Copper and he just laughed and shrugged his shoulders.   To ''Protect and to Serve' is just not on the agenda for these Clowns !

When I first read that I thought it said "add ladyboys in the middle of nowhere on the other more rural routes."........No doubt that could lead to even more trouble.

+1 for honesty.  I was sure I was going to read about brake failure again.

The only problem with pulling into a gas station or whatever to take a rest, is it makes too much sense.

No it seems they dont...also they are "pushed" to do long hours and drive
un-roadworthy vehicles if they want to keep the job.

I am fighting hard to understand the scene.

It looks like the truck has hit the limousine and both have been swerving over the center strip to the opposite driveway?

 

331 is a divided 4 lane highway (I know that quite well, it's a major path coming from Isan down to Pattaya) and both vehicles are facing wrong direction.

 

About highway 331,  it's quite a while that I drove there but at that time:

the condition of the left lane on long stretches was so awful that many (incl. me) stick to the right to avoid hard hits or breakdown. So maybe both vehicles on the right lane and the limousine creeping or coming to a halt or forced to slow down?

 

There are pictures on the net where you see some mud behind the truck and on the other side traffic facing same direction as the accident vehicles.
