North Korean women intercepted Thursday at the Chiang Rai border in Chiang Khong district.

CHIANG RAI — Eight suspected North Korean defectors were intercepted at the Chiang Rai border and taken into custody Friday.

Police arrested seven North Korean women and one child Thursday while patrolling the banks of the Mekong River. Authorities may charge the refugees with illegal entry before relocating them to a third country.

I think the South Koreans come and get them, it's the long way of escaping over the border.

Couldn't have picked a worse country to come to as a refugee.

Thailand is the best of the worst for this bunch, if that makes sense.

China sends 'em back. (or sells them into marital slavery)

Laos sends 'em back usually.

Russia sends 'em back.

Thailand is the best bet. The Thai cops usually fleece them for as much cash as possible before allowing the South Koreans to take them to South Korea.

From previous cases it's known that they are not sent back but handed to the South Koreans.

And the report says "third country" just avoiding to name the obvious.

True but the south will take them in, so they made it.  Getting through China is no easy feat.

They are usually accompanied, guided and sponsored by South Koreans. Possibly this group of border officials require an extra payment. Next stop lunch close to Jed Yot temple.

The South typically has to pay blood money to do so.

It is shameful that legitimate refugees like this are so poorly treated.

No-one has mentioned what happens if they are returned to North Korea, as China does regularly.    I've read that their future is very limited.

It's been mentioned several times before, their aim is to step on Thai soil and make sure they get arrested then get sent to South Korea which will never send them back to the North.

A very long hazardous rek but for many perhaps better than they can ever envisage in the North.

One of the destinations for North Koreans is Thailand. They get to Thailand as they know the Thai government  does not recognize North Korean escapees as refugees, but rather is illegal economic migrants, the Thai government allows North Koreans illegally entering the country to resettle in South Korea. This is possible because South Korea’s domestic law recognizes that North Koreans are also citizens of South Korea. The Thai government also cites the "conveniently blurred geographical distinctions"between the two Koreas in facilitating the transfer and resettlement process.
