So package has arrived at the EMS centre in BKK, from UK by parcel force addressed to my wife.

Last report on tracking says awaiting customs payment.

Does she have to pick up in BKK or can it be delivered by EMS and duty paid on delivery to home address.

Anyone have experience?

She will be calling them tomorrow and I'll update but would like to hear of any experiences from guys out there.

I think I got to the bottom of the whole thing with help in translation from a mate in BKK.

The 'agent' mentioned in tracking records is the courier company that EMS use to deliver from BKK to outside areas, not as an agent understood by the Thais here who see an 'agent' as someone that you have to pay extra toΒ collect and deliver your package.

The 'agent' might be Kerry logistics or similar that is on contract for final delivery or maybe even Thai post office, probably depends on the size and weight of the package ( that's a guess )

Anyway, you learn something new every day ??

I am really interested in this topic but I wish I understood this last comment. It is as blurry as a foggy morning.

When the words from EMS centre areΒ  'awaiting agent collection'Β  most Thais understand that to beΒ  Β 'EMS are waiting for you to send your own agent'

It actually means that their agent 'delivery service'Β  will be picking up the package for final delivery.

Normally when I have to pay tax 2 things can happen, i order a lot of stuff outside of Thailand. So i got experience but my experience is for the Bangkok area.

Β

1 they know what it is.. .they will tax you you will get a letter to collect at the post office or depot somewhere and pay the amount at the letter (bring your passport and money)

Β

2) They are unsure of what it is , you get a summons to get to Laksi post office where customs is you have to open the package maybe show an invoice and they will tax you there. I hate it when that happens as its time consuming.Β

Β

Its also a crap shoot as sometimes i pay for the cheese (yes I am a clog hopper) that my parents send me (4-5 kg) other times I don't pay tax on it. Luckily i never had to go to Laksi for the cheese.Β

Β

Been to Laksi 4 times or so, once for a box with paint and other tools, once for peptides (illegal here i think but when is said it was not for human consumption i got it with me), twice for fishing reels (why they could not figure that out is a mystery as they did not even use my validation but theirs once they saw it)

Car parts so pretty sure they will know what it is.

Dont mind the tax payment it was always expected.

I would think that they would have known a fishing reel what it is too but they did not. Sometimes the Thais move in mysterious ways. It was also clearly noted on the packaging and added to the customs declaration. (one reel from Australia an other from the USA)

If sent by Parcel Force which is part of Royal Mail, it should be sent direct to you by Thai Post or collected at your nearest PO.

Basically a door to door service using each nation's postal systems.

Yep, but when my wife read the 'awaiting collection by agent' she was convinced, based on work experience dealing with imports from Oz for the last project she worked on that an 'agent' had to be hired.

That's when the arguement started. ?
