My friend is now back from his holiday in LoS.

He has checked the registration papers and they say 1967, but Norwegian vehicle registration authorities

could not care less re 67 model or 68 model.

Anyway, he appreciated the info re the brakes and 1968.

As far as my friend and the previous owner know the bike was exported to the US late autumn 1967,

hence - could well be a -68.

He is of course interested in ascertaining whether the bike is 67 or 68.

Are there other characteristics than the brakes he should look for in order

to detect indicators?

Any advice appreciated.

Without checking my books downstairs, carb types (concentric or monobloc), air filters or not, points system 6CA or earlier, style of rear light, electrics & charging/regulating system, etc etc.

68 was a fair few new changes to a bike that was basically the same externally 63-67.

Rare 1930's Indian 4 banger ..

Nice looking bike that ..

thanks all for input/feedback

he has done that - moved the bike today from seller to his own place,

he found frame# and engine# and looked them up in online databases

and he is now comfortable that it is established that the bike is 68

obtained at a bargain price

I had a girlfriend who had an RD200 in that color.  Circa 1973-74.  That's when I was a mechanic at the Suzuki shop.  It had a really crappy clutch lever action compared to the Suzukis.

I've always liked my heavy touring bikes.

Obviously not the modern tat like Gold Wings & plastic Beemer <deleted>.

But the old stuff.

Britain never really did this market, prolly 'cos we had no autostradas or autobahns and our bikes would blow up if we sat at 90 mph all day long.

Although obviously the Vincent could tour, anywhere, any time, any place at any speed, but it was not really an everyman bike - limited to a few with deep pockets.

Post WW II in Europe in the 50's & 60's it was really just the BMW that completely cornered this high distance, high speed, super reliable market.

In the States just HD with the big 1200 twins and again, BMW competed in this popular segment, obviously better than HD at high speed, less oil leaks, fewer easier maintenance intervals.

But in the late 60's Moto Guzzi came along selling their V7 police bike to the civilians.

First as a 750, then 850, and by the mid 80's a 950.

Just as reliable as a BMW, but faster, and considerably better looking, the American market loved the Ambassadors, Eldorados and later Californias.

A better bike than HD could build yet still had Americana styled into it.

And a better touring bike in Europe than BMW were building.

Into the 80's, 90's and the 21 st century, eventually ending up as a FI 1100, via the California I, II, III, Evo.

So a long lineage from the late 60's to the end of the first decade in the 21 st century.

Now a completely different 1400 model, but still the name lives on.

Here's my homage to the early Guzzi touring twins....

Not often I'll put up modern kit as they tend to look all samey samey nowadays but I'll make an exception for this .. I seen WSB 'round from Phillip Island t'other night and this bike trashed the competition Kawa's n'all with Alvaro Bautista jockeying it ..

V4 Panigale introduced late 2018 with a 90° degree desmo' V4 , the top end model is said to shunt out over 220 hp .. that is a serious amount of power so no surprise it has a 200mm wide rear tyre to try and lay it down ..

With its clothes off the silver component beneath the gold engine casings is the exhaust .. and that's it with an outlet on either side ( yellow arrow ) .. Its equipped with all the latest electronics to try and make the most of its potential and from the way it disappeared from the rest of the field the other night potential and power it has in spades ..
