Let the insanity commence .. One of THE great sporting events on the calendar ..

Remember seeing a doc' few years on the TV where they wired up a rider with one of those mini heart monitor things .. Upto 4 beats a SECOND he was recording on the flat out bits .. And Pete Hickman's lap record last year with an ave speed of 135 mph beggars belief you could ave' that speed over 37 miles of public highway .. Great stuff ..

One of my life regrets. My company sent me there to work for 10days and they organized it, a week after the racing had finished!!! Grrrrrr.

I stumbled upon a UK drag racing website that has a good selection of bike photos from the early 70's, with commentary by those who rode them, and thought of thaiguzzi for some reason.  I can hear and smell them just by looking at the pictures.

Ta velly much.

Some lovely old stuff there.

Blown Triumph's, methanol & 100 octane, baling wire and gaffa tape.

Nothing better...

1968 Bultaco 350 El Bandido

I have the 60's-70's Montesa, Ossa & Bultaco workshop manuals here for all the 175-250-350 models.

The basic motor structure remained the same for all street to enduro to motocross to trials bikes.

The differences were in barrel porting and carb sizes, g/box ratios, sprocket ratios and C/R's.

An example being a Bultaco trials 250 with 16 bhp, 26mm carb,  and a 7:1 CR, or the enduro version with 39 bhp (THIRTY-NINE BRAKE HORSE POWER!!!), 32mm carb and 14:1 C/R....

To keep the thread ticking along...   A one off, art deco front wheel drive bike, named 'The Killer', powered by 3x 60cc 2 strokes, radially arranged around the front wheel:

Custom Front-Wheel Drive Motorcycle

Custom Front-Wheel Drive Motorcycle

The bike was built as a homage to this, also front wheel driven, German machine from the mid 30's:

Custom Front-Wheel Drive Motorcycle

This bike was built for and commissioned by an art gallery/motorcycle museum, by Craig Rodsmith, IMO, the greatest current bike builder on the planet. His talent in sheet alloy is insane. Being an Aussie, he also has a wicked sense of humour. Plenty of him & his work on YT.

Still did'nt make it a good brake...

BSA/Triumph went from the best TLS drum front brake ever fitted to a mass produced production bike anywhere, ever, the 68-70 model, to the worst TLS ever fitted to anything, the 71-74 version. Only an idiot in the death throes of a dying empire/factory could come up with such a ridiculous design.

Still looked good though.........

Chalk & cheese.

Apples & oranges.

The only similarity in design is that they are both called drum brakes. There the similarity ends.

If you are remotely interested, check out how both cams are operated and in which direction both lever arms are operated.

One works well and as it should, the other is a pretty hideous acid induced nightmare of design fallability.

Thank me later.

Thank you kind sir.

Your concern is most appreciated.

Fortunately everything is A-OK, not even a temporary TV ban or anything so exciting.

Just the annual one month visit avec son to the Motherland visiting family and friends.

And a brief respite from the computer and various forums inc this one.

I have also promised myself less time in front of said computer and forums and more time in the shed and on the road.

Life is too short etc.

Alas, an elderly invalided family member is not regaining health, and i (more than likely) shall be returning to Blighty soonish for the foreseeable future to look after her. Worst case scenario, deathbed and selling of assets etc could keep me there for the rest of this year.

Whilst in Europe & the UK for a month (one week road trip into France, Belgium, Holland & Germany with TG Senior, Junior & myself) i took a couple of pics of combos i liked.

The B31 is just a nice simple working man's bike, designed to last the lifetime of the owner, the V7 Guzzi is interesting in that it is one of the first civilian models released, a rare '67, with matching engine & frame numbers in the 2000 something, in itself a rarity quite valuable.

Sir, you impugn my, admittedly poor to begin with, character.  I was pointing out a design feature of the brake, namely the air scoop.  No endorsement of the efficacy, quality or effectiveness of the brake was given, either explicitly, implicitly or tacitly.  Furthermore, the failings of the brake should in no way detract from the point of posting the bike, which was to expose the forum to the beauty of the Bonneville in question.  Well, it is a beauty in my opinion anyway, and that's good enough for me.

Reminds me of the NSU TTS. Essentially four 250 motorbike cylinders on one crankcase.

Its origins were motorcycles and it eventually found its way home.

No disrespect intended, but i think you have posted in the wrong thread.

This thread's topic is called Motorcycle Porn, not Look at my Very Shiny Original Standard Very Poor Taste Japanese HD Bad Custom Copy.

A more hideous Jap bike is difficult to find, perhaps only being supplanted by the Thai Kingdom's ubiquitous Honda Phantom.

All the more sad as it is a Yamaha, a brand i am very fond of.

Here is something more in keeping with the topic and still having the word JAP in it.

Yeah, just been catching up, thanx.

Prolly off back to Blighty before the end of the month for my new job as a full time carer.

It'll be a shitty job (excuse the pun) but someone will have to do it.

I was going to start a new topic on April 25th on the celebration / anniversary / birthday of my beloved old T140, but i never got round to giving it a full spick'n'span polish and photo shoot.

And i wasn't here...

40 years on that date i rode out of Chapman's Motorcycles, Duke Street, Norwich on my new 1979 T140E.

Long time, 40 years, to have the same vehicle.

Made by the originally East German, and now defunct, MZ Motorrad.  They look like MZ ETZ 502 models.

Image result for mz motorrad etz 502

The East Germans had arguably the best two stroke technology at the time,  and MZ were major players in motorcycle racing in the 50's, until their champion rider, Ernst Degner, defected to the West in 1961.  He got a job with Suzuki, moved to Japan and won them their first GP championship in 1962.  All outlined in the interesting boo“Stealing Speed,” by Mat Oxley.

Some more East German bikes:

IWL scooters.  The Pitty, from the 50's...

image.png.9155e8b465a2e6fedcfa3de6fd751c26.png

And the Troll, from the 60's.  Obviously no more money for a design team...

image.png.95e9a95acd6d16dc9f929de5cba06a86.png

An EMW (Eisenacher Motorenwerk) R35, made in a BMW factory that was on the east side of the border when the country was partitioned.  Following the war they began making East German BMWs until the Western BMW sued them in 1952, so they stuck with the same 20 year old design and changed the name.

Factory ETZ 500. Apparently, 10 pieces were created. Power 24 horses, vmax 140, but I do not know how much this data is true. He is standing in a museum in Berlin.

Not strictly bike but my mate Dean who's as full on a Kawasaki disciple you will find worked for B R back in the day so I claim that as a very tenuous link ..

Ever been in a station when one of these came thundering through or even better when pulling away from the platform with the 'chargers whistling .?

This is what powered it x 2 ..

the Napier Deltic .. from the 50's when we were still pretty good at engineering and making stuff ..

18 opposed pistons , 2 stroke supercharged diesel rated at upto 1650 hp each driving DC generators that powered electric traction motors at the drive bogie .. Sort of a Heavy Metal hybrid if you will ..

These used to haul coal up a slight gradient to the steelworks over the way when I were a lad and the noise they made ( not to mention smoke ) was awesome and one of the earliest things that got me into all things mechanical ..

Middle pic' is an end elevation to try and give hint on how they work though there's loads more on the 'netty .. Sermon on long lost now defunct brilliant bits of Brit' engineering now finished .. Amen
