"Manager said the whole area - an important place for both Thai and foreign tourism - was an utter disgrace."

this story is a exaggeration. I walk up and down Soi Six sometimes weeks at a time and everything is fine.

by the way, where is the beach?:cheesy:

Walk West-ish, follow your nose toward the smell of low tide and gasoline fumes. Be careful crossing Beach Rd.  Dodge the Ladyboys, buy some weed and Viagra, mind the vendor umbrella spokes at eye level, and there you are.  European Paradise Lost and Found.  Lovely Jubbly!

The never ending story of the 'beautification of pattaya'... when are people going to get it.... you don't go to Pattaya for it's swimming and it's beaches!!

Can you recommend any good family attractions in the resort?

When I first came to Jomtien in 2001 the beach was clean.  The water didn't look like Koh Samet but you could swim in it.  At least there is no more simulated sex at the pools.  That makes me warm and fuzzy in my special place.

If you are looking for great beaches, go elsewhere. If you are looking for an area, where the local administrators have alot of pride, and are willing to spend the massive budgets they have to work with, to keep the place immaculate, go elsewhere. Pattaya is for carting, golf, drinking, or sex. If you want a great beach, consider any of the following ones:

Tikehau Island, French Polynesia. Can't decide whether you want white- or pink-sand beaches? ...

Dreamland Beach, Bali. ...

Bathsheba Beach, Barbados. ...

Seven Mile Beach, Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands. ...

Horseshoe Bay, Bermuda. ...

Harbour Island, Bahamas. ...

Blue Beach (La Chiva), Vieques, Puerto Rico. ...

Trunk Bay, St. John, USVI.

Maipio Valley Beach, Big Island, Hawaii

Parrot Cay, Turks and Caicos

Lindquist Beach, St. Thomas

Palm Beach, Aruba

Honopu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

Add to list Algarve Portugal, beautiful beaches ⛱?

I guess you've never been to the Mediterranean, countless stunning beaches. I would also add the 200 mile long beach of the Atlantic coast of France, north of Biarritz, as my personal favourite. Even Bournemouth beach in England.

in land locked and arctic locked Russia.

"land locked Russia"   ?

Are you kidding?  The Russians have fine beaches on the Crimean peninsula on the Black Sea as well as the coastline from the entrance to the Sea of Azov including the city of Socchi down to the Georgia border. Plus more beaches on the Caspian Sea.

I’m told by a reliable source that the mafia is paid to remove garbage from the islands and dump it into the sea late at night.

Ever met an Asian, who gives a damn for the environment ? Everything at arms lenght away does not disturb them. See all rubbish around.

My son was hotel manager at Koh Samui. Hotel with a US$ 700 per night, so… wise to have a clean beach, no rubbish, and especially NO GLASS. Tried to explain that to his staff and clean up the area. IMPOSSIBLE. Better hire in apes...

Exactly.

Which normal people come to Pattaya for the beach?

I have a very good mate from England, comes to Thailand most years for a 2-3 week holiday. Visits me for a week, other stuff, and bookends the holiday with 4-5 days at the beginning & end with, yep, Pattaya.

He loves the place, has a great time, but he never sees the beach...

In a way, the powers that be are basically trying to put lipstick on a pig if they think Pattaya will be regarded by discerning tourists as a classy paradise destination.             It is indeed a popular destination and that word also ends in **ssy paradise.

I think the only ones who believe that people come to central Pattaya for the beach are in their city hall.
Even Thai people come here for other reasons but surely not for the beach

I call it "PartyYeah!".

On an incoming tide.  Tidal flow assists cash flow.

That's ok, as long as you not allowed to smoke on the beach or have a massage or by some food from vendors and other multitude of restrictions the rubbish and ruins are part of Pattaya charm...

Why don't they fine the tourists for taking a sunbath on these dirty beaches ? Would be easy money...

Oh I don't know,   some water sports are in high demand,  and perhaps when they mentioned golden sand in the article sand was a typo

...collect foreign money....any way and every way....

...collect trash.....or.... give the foreigners something for their money....???

...a 'foreign notion'...???

...sadly...that is the prevalent attitude in this 'tourist paradise'....

....people have gotten too complacent and expect the money to continue to fall...in piles...into their laps...

...tourist money....welcome....tourists not...???

...figure out that equation....some type of 'new math'....???

I always wonder what really people like in that garbage city.  Some are clearly there for prostitutes.  living in Pattaya is just something I will never understand.
