Why would the teacher be fired for what is surely a one off and completely unexpected incident ?

 

I can only think of one reason the teacher would be held responsible and that's because something like this is not completely unexpected.

For sure something like this could have happened many times, and conveniently swept under the carpet.

Bullyism in various forms has always existed, i guess.

As difficult as it is sometimes, teachers do have a duty of care. Dismissing the teacher in this instance was appropriate. I would also suggest they should do the same to the director.

It also highlights a major failure in Thai society and that is how 'problem youth' are dealt with.

I am not excusing their behaviour at all. They should be removed from society and prosecuted to the full extent of the law. 

But unfortunately I've seen it in too many schools..the kids aren't taught to overcome adversity or given the tools needed to do so. If there is a breakdown of the family unit, or parents are alcoholics or dead or whatever the case may be, kids are virtually abandoned, instead of having any kind of support put in place. The teachers don't want to spend time dealing with difficult students or teaching them how to behave. It's 'out of sight, out of mind' and they often group together with other problem youth to encourage each others dangerous behavior.

The widespread availability and easy access to pornographic content on the internet, rape-love scenes in Thai soap drama's, and general cultural acceptance of men galavanting around with multiple "kik's" is certainly not helping these youths follow good role models.

 

Before we blame the youths we need to take a hard look as to why they walked down this ghastly path.

 

I am deeply saddened and disturbed by what has happened to this young girl though I'm pretty sure it happens to a lot more girls and boys then we are aware but is kept secret in shame.

 

I only hope the proper psychological counseling will be given to the child and her parents and that in time she will be able to grow up without permanent mental scars or at least able to realize that not all men are evil.

My sympathy for the poor young girl and her family. I am at a loss for words for what I think should happen to those boys, and this happened in the land of smiles where religion is supposed  to teach people right from wrong (and parents) it certainly has not happened in this case. !!!

Omg LOS! A four old girl can't even go to a school toilet without being raped. Maybe right and wrong classes are needed in the school curriculum?

Sacking the teacher is I think a little harsh, permanently suspending the boys un til a Court case has determined their fate would be appropriate as well as holding the parents to blame as well. If the teacher can get the sack for not observing , then the parents of the boys can be held also guilty of failing to instill morals in the boys. 

 

The poor girl at her age, to second guess what she saw is a Thai Authorities attempt trying to cast doubt on her recollection , if that was my daughter I would have by now been arrested for Murder of Three boys !!!

I understand your point of view but the teacher did have a duty of care to look after the child.  From reports there do appear to be school procedures to avoid cases of small children being allowed to wander off on their own for their own safety.  Discipline for the teacher who has singularly failed in their duty is appropriate and these discipline procedures can obviously be completed before any investigation and court case is finished.

To my simplistic point of view this event could have been avoided if the teacher had ensured the child was not allowed to go to the toilet alone.  Sadly the teacher will also carry this guilt with them for life.

It must be different where you come from versus me. Long before the internet, when I was young in the fifties and sixties, such crimes were reported in newspapers. And my mother, an avid reader of print, made sure bro and I knew about these crimes. I guess that was her way of warning us to be good boys.

 

But of course in the digital era, the coverage is even more prevalent.

Conversely, who then takes responsibility for the 3 dozen or so kids left alone in the classroom? When the cat's away, the mice will play. The system is broke and needs a fix! Quite the dilemma.

I have a 4 year old and a 9 year old and if this happened to either of them, not wanting to come across as being angry, but all involved would be found hung from the nearest tree in their village, whilst also having their privates removed and stuffed in their mouths.

Very unfair to condemn Thailand over this and other similar incidents. Such horrifying acts happen in North America where I live, all too frequently.

My thoughts are that firstly it is sad to hear about this (Again), and i hope that the girl can recover as much as possible and is not scarred for life by this.

 

Secondly, I can understand why the teacher was let go by the school. She did not follow the rules in allowing the girl to go alone to the toilets. But, i have taught in a school where there is just one teacher per kindergarten class, and students were allowed to go on their own because of this. 

 

Thirdly, some of her colleagues will not look at her the same again if there were several teachers per class, and will lose trust in her.

 

Fourthly, no doubt some parents have threatened to withdraw their children from the school if the teacher still remained, plus affecting the next terms influx of students, and as we know, money talks in Thailand and no Director can afford to lose revenue.

 

My fifth point is that the three students were allowed to roam around the school instead of being in class. I would guess that they all asked to go to the toilet too at the same time to get out of another lesson. I did impose a rule in my classes that only one student could go to the toilet at a time and the next one had to wait until the previous one returned. I found that when multiple students asked to go and you restricted them to one student at a time, the others decided that they did not want to go after all.

 

For me, the school failed in several areas, and i don't hold up much hope of the justice system not failing either.

Cull the turds in society... 

I do hope, that at least one of those boys do not make it to adult age, and the rest

get their balls removed in the next little while. At 4 the little girl will be okay later

in life, but will take years before she trusts any male at all. I have talked with many

people who have had someone in their family raped in their childhood or teens.

Agreed.  The system is not perfect which is why some countries have teacher's assistants.  I would say that the three dozen left in the classroom together should be a lot safer than one allowed to wander off to the toilets on their own.  The world has proved time and again that no child can ever be totally safe so it would seem logical to identify where it is more likely something bad could happen and fix that first.  I echo your wishes for an answer.

Bringing up children is like buying a lottery ticket, sometimes doing your best just isn't enough. As a retired Occupational Therapist long associated with building design and adaptation, I would very much like to support Paveena whose opinion here is deserving of great respect and her suggestions make sense.

 

Finance cannot be a problem as the education budget  is 511 million Bhat (If Mr Google is to be believed, that equates to nearly 38 Chinese submarines at 13.5 Billion Bhat each).   For those interested, the photographs associated with the article are revealing.

I agree with you on the many bad influences out there, and the bad role models with the kiks etc. Those things might encourage bad s3xual behaviour, unwanted advances, assaults, and even rapes.

But that girl is 4 years old - just a baby really. This is a whole different category.  A whole different level of f'd up!

Living in a village there seems to be very little discipline. It’s a major concern because it will lead to a large percent in trouble.

It seems that the 3 boys were in care, so this time you will need to blame someone else
