BANGKOK, 4 October 2018, (NNT) - The Prime Minister has visited the northern province of Lamphun, as part of the government's campaign to promote secondary destinations.

Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha was accompanied by Interior Minister General Anupong Paojinda and Tourism and Sports Minister Weerasak Kowsurat. Their visit is part of the "Thai Tiew Thai" tourism campaign.

Before departing Suvarnabhumi Airport, officials gave the Prime Minister a demonstration of how to check in with the airline using a mobile phone application.

The campaign is a joint effort of Thai Airways International, Thai Smile Airways, the Tourism Authority of Thailand and Krung Thai Bank to entice travelers to visit 55 secondary tourist destinations by offering a tax break of up to 15,000 baht.

The crew first pay respect to Phra Nang Chamathewi Monument in the province's capital district. Phra Nang Chamathewi was the first ruler of the ancient city of Hariphunchai , which is now known as Lamphun Province. He offered a Lanna lantern to the revered statue. The prime minister inscribed a message, wishing Lamphun locals and Thai people happiness for all eternity.

Lantern offering is part of the local Loy Kratong festival, paying respect to the Phra That Hariphunchai and Phra Nang Chamathewi. This year's Loy Kratong festival is scheduled on November 22nd. A group of local artisans has staged a lantern making demonstration for the visiting party. General Prayut expressed admiration for the craft and suggested members of the group to pay attention to the market demand, in order to effectively generate income. The prime minister also commended the craftmen for using local materials to make the lanterns.

The entourage later boarded the rail tram to Wat Mahawan Woramahavihan , to pay respect to the Phra Rot Luang buddha image. The buddha statue, which is locally known as Phra Rot Lamphum , was brought to the temple by Phra Nang Chamathewi. Worshippers have also made several miniature duplicates of Phra Rot Luang buddha image.

A large number of Lamphun locals donned in traditional garment were seen welcoming Prime Minister Gen. Prayut and his entourage.
