Five top police officers transferred following raid on Chiang Mai gambling den

By The Nation

Five senior officers from a police station in Chiang Mai's Muang district were transferred to inactive posts at the Provincial Police Bureau 5 on Saturday after Army troops and Interior Ministry officials raided a gambling den in their jurisdiction.

A total of 93 suspected gamblers were rounded up and 300 card games and Bt105,160 in cash were seized when officials from the Provincial Administration Department and Chiang Mai-based Army troops raided a gambling den in Muang district at 8.30pm on Friday.

On Saturday, Provincial Police Bureau 5 acting commissioner Pol Maj Gen Montree Samburananon issued an order to transfer the five top officers of the Chang Phuak police station pending an investigation.

Transferred were Pol Col Amornchai Panya, commander of the Chang Phuak station, Pol Lt Col Jirattipong Lertwiriyanon, deputy commander, Pol Lt Col Chanin Kheha, deputy commander, Pol Lt Col Weerapol Dokchan, crime suppression inspector of the station, and Pol Lt Col Natthapol Ekkachan, investigation inspector of the station.

Montree also set up a committee to investigate whether the five officers have any links to the gambling den.

bet you 1000 baht at 5:1 that the  5 will eventually get away scot free ????

All they will do is move them to other Police Stations around the Country, where their behaviour continues and it does not solve the problem or serve as any kind of proper punishment.

That is just not the Thai way.

Warning: if you are a Thai cop and get caught running an illegal gambling den you will get a transfer!

Instant dismissal with no appeal.  Problem solved.

Will never happen; as they say they are 'A Tolerant Society' and that people who do wrong should be forgiven.

The reason for this 'Tolerance' is nothing to do with actual forgiveness; it is to do with keeping people quiet and controlled because if they severely punish such people they will start 'singing like a bird' about all the corruption that goes on above their rank, which would eventually bring down the whole Empire of corrupt practices which riddle the country from top to bottom.  Just moving people around without serious punishment keeps them happy on full pay and untouched pension rights, always with a chance of further promotion later and a bigger slice of the takings.   Two Policemen in my Wife's family and they both admit they can do just about anything illegal they like without serious consequence but they prefer to keep aiming for promotions as with every uplift comes a lot more access to larger rewards from 'Takings'.

Wouldn't you, just once, like to see an article naming the police officers who've been transferred from inactive posts back to active posts, somewhere they can make a bit of cash? Just for the humour value?

Did they rent a semi-truck to move all of the envelopes that the five had accumulated but were unable to open fast enough?
