Doi Inthanon mountaintop tourist hotspot in Chiang Mai was visited by 8,834 people on Saturday morning, the first day of the long New Year weekend.

Kritsayam Kongsatree, chief of the Doi Inthanon National Park, said the tourists visited the mountaintop to enjoy the first sunlight of the day, even although there was no frost on Saturday morning.

He said the number of visitors could grow past the 10,000 mark before the end of the day. The park expects over 10,000 visitors each day of the long New Year weekend, he added.

He said the temperature on the mountaintop was measured at 6 degrees Celsius on Saturday morning and 9C at the Kiew Mae Pan viewpoint.

There would have been at least that many up here at Wat Phra That Pha Son Kaeo yesterday and again this morning. Absolute madness so put it on your list too.

Bit out of the way from Chiang Mai?

If we are making a list Makro Hang Dong Road was heaving today and no doubt more so tomorrow.

Tourist? Foreign or Thai? I suspect that no additional boost in foreign cash although the spending left by that many tourist should help the local city economy.
