A revived HDD will shut down after displaying the window for 3 seconds

Featured Replies

Thought the HDD was dead. But a computer expert revived it. (Not sure  w h a t  he did)

I ran the CC Cleaner's wipe clean function and it was very slow...

Then it wouldn't boot again.

Long distance diagnosis is very tough, but I would love to hear what this might be?

Thinkpad X140 E, 4 GB RAM, bought second hand on Ebay.

Thank you in anticipation.

That's whats wrong.

Did you wipe "Free Space Only" or "Entire Drive"?

First you should find out if the hard disk is slow or if your Windows installation on that HDD is slow.

If possible start your notebook from a CD or a memory stick (not the internal HDD) and then look at the data on the internal HDD. You should soon know if the data access is slow. If that is the case them maybe there is a problem with the HDD or the settings in the BIOS of the notebook (not Windows).

If above is fast enough then your Windows installation is the problem. Try to start in SafeMode, remove all the unnecessary programs, etc.

One way people make their own PCs slow if by installing multiple Antivirus programs at the same time. This is just one example of what might make it slow.

This is a dead cat bouncing. The drive has had it. Time to move on.

Its not dead..its merely resting.. pining for the Fjords... etc

As others have said, if you already know the HDD is a refurb, time to get rid of it and get a new one. While you are at it if you can get yourself an SSD caddy (+ a 120 GB SSD), bin the DVD and replace with caddy. SSD for OS & programs, HDD for redirected default folders and other storage.

Second bit about the SSD, only after proving the laptop is OK............................
