Any hornbills left up your way? Supposed to be in North Borneo right now spotting the fabulous creatures but will likely have to wait a year or two but all good.

Sorry, nothing as exotic as hornbills up this way.  The openbill stork like to eat the snails in the rice fields so find their way to our area most years.  Not very attractive birds but they are big and look good in flight.

The other day it was just too beautiful to stay indoors so we went for a walk to the local reservoir. On the trail we saw our neighbors using a planting technique we haven't seen before. The rice is grown in little trays and then thrown by hand into the watery field. The dirt encrusted rootball is heavy enough to keep the right end up, it seems.  The result is not as aesthetic as traditional planting by hand or the modern machine method but it is cheap and does not require a lot of people.

Fantastic set of pis VF.

Showed the Mrs the rice method. She said it was new to her.

Don't get that much water in these parts. Rice yields must be fantastic.

We only get one crop per year but areas nearer the river can get two or three.

Walking on the trail listening to bugs and birds in the trees and the crunching sound of leaves beneath our feet, there suddenly appeared a splash of color on the forest floor.

To villagefalang:  Don't be disillusioned by people who don't enjoy the beauty in what you see or the enjoyment you get by living outside the city and all its entrapments.   My wife and I have outside of Udon for 23 years on what we like to call our piece of paradise.  It's nothing special....an acre of land to pretty much do as we please.  We get to enjoy fireflies at night during certain times of the year, or the sight of two yellow kraits mating in the pitch darkness along the jungle that borders our yard.  African moths like to cacoon in our santol trees and when the moths come out, they are a sight to be seen.  Better yet, they'll mate almost as soon as they emerge....right in our back yard.

I love netflix and the internet, but get as much enjoyment at watching the variety of insects or birds or jungle sounds that are part of our daily life.  10 months of the year, I usually take my showers outdoors.....sometimes under the moon and sometimes under the setting sun.  I can't capture the sound of 70' bamboo flowing in the breeze or the taste of honey moments after sticking my fingers into a fresh hive stuck between limbs or the smell of an orchid that's 20' away from where I'm walking......but I suspect that you can.

I've learned to understand that the beauty of a flower that's growing close to the ground is what others might consider a weed.....or the overpowering buzz of evening insects or frogs is beauty to my ears but for others it's time to go indoors and get away from the noise.

I'd say, "Enjoy your life in Thailand", but it's obvious you already are.

Thanks for sharing these great images. Look like a paradise. I have never been in Thailand, but we're planning to have a trip in 2021. I can't wait to see your beautiful country!

Does anyone know VillageFarang in the real world ?

Would you be kind enough to make contact and tell him that his assorted ramblings are being missed ?

Cheers

Yeah, hope he is okay. He hasn't been on TV since 3 May.

I have seen him on other social media groups in the past week and his writings seem to indicate he is doing just fine.

We even have a very special Chef's Table here in Chiang Rai which is absolutely amazing.

So, do you live in the city, or outside it?

Nice photos.

The rice paddy ones remind me of the restaurant I liked in the country near the village. Nothing as flash as the Chef's Table, but a very acceptable fried rice chicken. Lovely to eat and watch the sun go down over the mountains.

Right. And not just here and now. Increasing numbers of people  everywhere in recent years and decades are just barely able to survive on cheap food and rented rooms.  People who can afford to own a decent home in the countryside are very lucky. I know because I am poor too.

And of course  the quality of life in the  whole world will  continue to deteriorate.   The near future will be Hell but we won't be around to see it.  You should enjoy it while you can.

Nice photos VF especially of the upscale cuisine. But, for right now, I would stay off the Visa section as there are a lot of people desperate to be able to financially stay in Thailand given the new regs and your stuff would smack to them of "Let them eat cake" as I have been on the receiving end just for saying that I intend to be able to comply with the new regs.

Someone noted earlier that he was posting Elsewhere and seemed alive and well, sometimes we all need a change of scenery.

Keep well VF.

My friends and I lived in Thailand for a few months when we were students. Saved up money by eating fried rice and convenience store food! We miss the experience a lot! ????

I did not even know this thread was around and have just discovered it while looking up something else.

I therefore have not read any comments except this last page.

In very simple terms all I can say at this moment is that I do not know of any other country I would rather be in at anytime and even more so now given all the COVID restrictions in place elsewhere in the world.

I believe he was using an iPhone, and tweaking the images a little in Photoshop.
