So, I have what is considered a good educated wife, with a nice job with a very decent salary from international company.

She owns a house and has significant savings.

Yet..... (unless it's for work) she dresses like a gypsy, still eats her 50 baht street food and eats on the floor.

I don't get it.

Point being what exactly?

Maybe you are the weirdo dressing smart around the house and eating your food at the table?

  • Just be thankful you've married a Thai lady who is happy to be herself and is not trying to be something she not. The projection of wealth doesn't make anyone a better person. If you want respect then

  • Too much thinking clouds the brain....if she,s happy to do it leave her be....my guess is she could have issues about the way you live your life....think about it

everyone  thinks theyre normal

I don't understand why some of you connect furniture use with education.

Asians don't use furniture all that much.

This thread is important for anyone considering building a house upcountry. When MIL and family come around they will all sit on the floor to eat. SO you don't need the expense of building a fancy dining room or even a fancy indoor kitchen. Unless the kitchen is large enough for them all to sit on the floor.

Wife wearing "gardening" clothes? If she is comfortable......

Wish i'd known that a few years ago, would have saved myself a few bob! I wouldn'-t have bothered with a cooker and a microwave either, just a 5 Baht bag of charcoal would have done the trick, along with a couple of broken rusty knives, a som tam pot and an old aluminium bucket to cook the stews, stuck a couple of bamboo poles outside with a tarp draped over, a plastic bucket from the 20 Baht store for the washing up and voila, a lovely Thai al fresco kitchen to boot.

Ah yes, my wife never asks for much, which is a good thing really because she wouldn't get it anyway! I don't ask for much either which is also a good thing as I wouldn't get it either, but who cares once your prostate is the size of an egg.

Heat rises.  Sitting on the floor is cooler than sitting higher up.

Thai Custom.

Don't you come from a country that has unique customs?  Lederhosen? Vegemite sandwiches?  Etc, etc, etc

And that's why we have chairs, in cold old Europe sitting on the floor would be too cold for at least 6 months of the year. a short cut to rheumatism and arthritis, not good for the life expectancy.....

I really like our home but there is one thing that my missus does that leaves me scratching my head. Kitchen chairs are not for sitting on, they're for leaving piles of washed clothes on.

We have a nice basin and mirror between the kitchen and bathroom, perfect for a leisurely shave but it's full of washing powder packets, Sunlite, etc

I like to keep some stuff upstairs but I have to negotiate a haphazard pile of toys, clothes coat hangers on the first few steps.

My wife's family are posh. They don't eat on the floor, at least not at our house. They sit on this table out back with the food. I leave them to it and the dogs wait underneath waiting for leftovers that they can eat. Even they don't want the fermented fish and other stinky stuff.

Some people don't know when they have it good, she's a good woman,

obviously saves money, has a good job,a house, savings, and  YOU criticize her,

maybe you want one that just is on the Facebook all day, takes drugs, sleeps

around, some people don't know when they are well off, I wonder if she's

posting stuff  on social media about stuff she feels abhorrent about YOU.

That is what generally happens in countries with very little diversity and an ingrained cultural.

My wife is as western as they come for a Thai woman, studied and lived abroad etc and has many western friends in Bangkok. Yet as soon as she goes to her family's place here she dresses awfully, acts differently and is completely back into that way of sitting on the floor whilst eating and generally talking about nothing but food.

Look at any Thai's facebook page.

It's always pictures of making food, eating food, or thinking about eating more food!

LOL !!! Join the club !!! My wife has 2 bachelor degrees and is head teacher of a school , but old habits die hard . My wife , daughter and grandchildren like to eat excremental food , sitting on the floor , usually in a doorway so no one can pass . There is a well known saying among foreign husbands here " You can get the monkeys out of the jungle , but you can't get the jungle out of the monkeys ".

Its a sickness I tell you....

My girlfriend and her friends all eat sitting on the floor with the food either on a mat, or on a low table.

When they invite me to join them, they always provide me with a thick cushion to sit on as my knees and hips cannot, and have never been able to contort into that cross legged, lotus position that they all use.

You have a beautiful garden. I think sitting at the table al fresco having dinner or a sundowner cocktail in that environment would be really most pleasant (subject to heat/mossies)

Bit extreme considering she only comes home once a month.

My wife is a Ban Nok. I like her the way she is. She is educated but dresses also like a gypsie when we are at home. Lounges around in my shirts and football pants. When we go out, she dresses like a real girl but I see she hates it. I live in an old shell of a Lana House that I did some maintenance too. She does not eat on the floor. Her parents are too old to sit down on the floor anymore, so they sit at a basic kitchen table when eating. I have bought two very nice Laziboy leather recliners for them (the parents) to sit in to watch TV. They love the recliners and I find them sleeping in them at night sometimes, instead of the bed.

You are not going to take the Thai out of most these girls. If you did, I think you would be ruining them. I like them just the way they are. I have one of my wife's friends that owns a very nice house, has a big kitchen table but when we go to eat, it is on the floor all the time. Try eating a pork chop they cook specially for me with veges on the floor- can be a challenge in the lest.

Stop thinking like a farang. This is Thailand where traditions run deep and the people (wife included) will not change on your account. Love it or leave it. (Happily married and retired in the north).  Let her do it her way, it doesn't hurt you (but she might)

That's called not forgetting where you come from even if you are rich or well off .

Nobody who is married to a Thai female (educated, non educated, bargirl whatever) should underestimate their genetically programed ability to physical hurt you.....after of course, eating and the prescribed screaming at you, at unbelievable volume! LOL

My wife is exactly the same. Of course the upside of this is that nothing really stresses them out and they are happy anywhere.

So long as someone is selling the makeup they want on Lazada.

Further, what's wrong with how she eats etc?

It's not wise to think your way is perfect or the only way, how about you compromise, and the reality is that many Thais still follow the old Thai ways of doing things.

Why has violence or hurting people suddenly come into the thread?

What is all this snobbery about sitting on the floor to eat?  Whats wrong with sitting on the floor and sharing Thai food with each other?

Its their culture (and the culture of many countries around the world)  Perhaps they thing you sitting at a table with your friends is too formal and not friendly or fun?

I now prefer to sit on the floor to eat at my house.  Of course if farangs come around or my parents we sit at the table for a meal (mostly because my parents are old and would find it hard to get up and down off the floor, and most farnags are not used to it and so find it uncomfortable.

I also don't see anything wrong with dressing comfortable at home to relax.  I really don't want to be wearing designer gear and a suit when I am at home relaxing or doing work on the garden / house.

If I sat on the floor to do anything, I doubt that I would be able to get up again without major assistance.
