Prison chain-gang cleans out Pattaya sewers

Featured Replies

Glad to see they're wearing their government issued PPE gear.

Next news headline will be "Cholera Outbreak At Pattaya Remand Prison".

Why don't they give more people community service and have them pick up all the garbage everywhere.

If they are going to do this work, then give them the appropriate clothes and protective  gear.

The regular paid staff don't get that!

And you expect convicts to be given it?

Remand prison???

They have not been sentenced, the purpose of a remand prison should be as last resort for persons who may not turn upon judgement day.

Chain gang work should be for convicted prisoners...

In the UK the unions and the waste management companies would never allow the criminals to steal their jobs. But here no unions and no waste management means the cons get to do this without protective clothing or masks, lucky lads.

Well-behaved inmates were put to work around the city Dec. 4, climbing down into sewers and scraping out the garbage, muck and other waste impeding the flow of wastewater and storm runoff.

Makes one wonder what the trouble makers are assigned.

Uh huh.  I suppose the alternative must be organ harvesting for those not willing to stand in crap.

A cruel and unusual punishment. Clearly slave labour is widely accepted in Thailand.

Are they not doing this volontarily?

Soldier Freddy was always

ready and steady

Unlike soldier Neddy

who was never ready

and steady.

That's why when soldier Freddy was outside Buckingham Palace on guard in the rain wind and freezing cold

being ready and steady

Soldier Neddy

was home in beddy.

All sounds good and picture looks nice , however I saw them working , boiling hot, guards smoking and drinking water, prisoners had nothing , not a single bottle of water.

Maybe guards had water stashed elsewhere but but it sure looked hard

How is the exposure of at risk marginalized people to infectious disease and toxic waste a win?

Look at the workers. Aside from cheap latex gloves, no protective equipment of any kind. They are being forced into dealing with waste/debris that is classified as a biohazard. These inmates are at risk because many are in prison for drug related offences. Drug users in Thailand  have a higher incidence of TB and immune system suppressed related conditions. This makes them more vulnerable to opportunistic infections. It is morally wrong and  evil to have workers climbing into sewers wearing flip flops. They will come out with fungus and parasites attached to their feet. No amount of rinsing will clean that away.  It is unacceptable to have these people in shorts and tshirts  climbing into sewers and drainage pipers where dengue carrying mosquitoes are in high concentration. If they are going to do this work, then give them the appropriate clothes and protective  gear.

Don't you think living in a cell with 24 others , they are just about immune to anything by now ?

Also they get a bit of fresh air .

If you're a "well behaved" prisoner you get to clean out turds, tampons and god knows what else. And if you misbehave....................?

But you get to spend time outside of prison and see perhaps some women instead of the sausage fest in the prison.
