Trump imposing Tariffs on Steel? Is Trump, ACTUALLY, the Man of Steel, and not just another Clark-Kent? When I was 19, I worked in a Steel Mill....a Rolling Mill. At age 19, I took up the position in the factory where another operator had just been killed on the job. What is the point of my mentioning this, anyway? IDK. Except that working in a steel mill is dangerous work. I doubt Trump has ever worked in a steel mill. Still, we know that Trump has worked at McDonald's. Trump has always been a very hard worker, and one of the most successful people I know. Some people do not like Trump, much... BUT....I do. I used to dislike him, much, but.... No more. Anyway, back to steel tariffs: I think it is criminal that we cannot enforce new regulations to make steel mills safer for workers..... And, I bet that Trump can do this. Pennsylvania was once famous for steel mills, and I spent some of my life in PA, in a steel mill. People in Pennsylvania are totally behind Trump.....and for many good reasons.... Nobody in the USA should be killed on the job, just because they need to make a living. Without steel mills, we would not have washing machines. And, as we all know, it is the lowly washing machine that change society, just through setting women free to pursue more important work. NOTE: I was promoted to a higher level operator's job in a steel mill, the week after the guy was killed at that position in the factory. I knew the guy fairly well. I took over his position. A very dangerous job. Sometimes you get killed..... Maybe we should think more about steel-mill worker safety, even above our cares about tariffs, if we were to think about it..... Operators rarely die from cooking fries at McDonald's, of course. -

Agree with most of what you say. But … as regards "business communities do see the advantage of migrant illegal labour", my understanding is that illegal immigrants (who are said to receive about 50 GBP per week on top of free hotel accommodation, free food, and free health care) are said to be not entitled to work. Apparently many do. This surely means that not only they but also their employers are breaking the law. But perhaps the government's view is that the laws are to be selectively applied. It maybe depends upon who you are: whether a documented UK citizen or an undocumented illegal immigrant. Personally, I would have thought there to be many manual jobs that could be done by illegal immigrants in favour of local communities. Jobs that need to be done but for which local councils lack funding, so no citizens are deprived of work nor local businesses lose out on contracts. Thus they can pay with labour the cost of their board and lodging, while still receiving some pocket-money. What is illegal is criminal and ought to be penalised rather than rewarded. Before being granted any form of legal status, illegals should be able to demonstrate a working knowledge of written and spoken English and of the country's legal system, customs and institutions. And swear an oath of allegiance to the nation, the breaking of which would entail revocation of their status. Britain has given refuge to many refugees over past centuries, including amongst my forebears French Huguenots. They came seeking refuge from persecution and annihilation, not to live at others expense. -
