A Myanmar woman was arrested while allegedly attempting to smuggle three undocumented Myanmar workers out of Chiang Mai back to their country on Tuesday.

Pol Lt-Colonel Thitiwat Ruechanukul, deputy Chiang Mai immigration police chief, said Nan Nyo, 34, was arrested at the Chiang Mai bus terminal in Muang district on Tuesday.

Thitiwat said Nan was arrested while picking up three Myanmar people at the bus terminal. The three were identified as Pan, 30, Kham, 50 and Aung Lu, 27.

The three told police that they promised to pay Nan Bt3,400 each to drive them back to Myanmar in her pick-up truck.

Thitiwat said the four had sneaked across the border into Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district.

Nan had allegedly sneaked into Thailand on her own and had been helping undocumented Myanmar migrants return to Myanmar, while the other three had allegedly sneaked in three months ago and wanted to return to Myanmar after working for three months, Thitiwat said.

As I understand it, Burmese workers taking a bus will be shaken down by the police at every checkpoint between CM and whatever border. Hypocrisy writ large.

Obviously made some good earnings whilst 'helping' them.

The Powers To Be get to 'check the checkboxes' in the Adhere's to Human Rights and Enforces Human Smuggling Laws column of their UN reports.

I dont think the people working on housing construction in our village are any different to any other construction site. They are overwhelming of Burmese nationality. Why ? because in the majority of cases they put in a harder, longer day than Thais.

Its surely up to their employers to make sure they are legal. They didnt come for a holiday.

They sneak 'em here, they sneak 'em there, they sneak those Burmese everywhere !

Sure glad that Immigration has done such a good job of securing the country's borders and preventing illegal entries and exits... :cheesy:

May have been the case many years back, try geting a Burmese maid for less than 4-500 b a day now.

A friend in the building game pays his construction workers 10-12,000 baht a month and they are all legal.

As I previously said, my BiL employed 2 Laos waitress in his restaurant earlier this year on 100bht/day plus they could eat and sleep out back. He did arrange their papers as well, apparently they moved on since then, can't say I blame them. While he was looking for those girls to employ, my gf did a few shifts to help out at 200bht/evening, my daughter did a shift but didn't like the male attention.

As for a white foreigner trying to get cheap labour, not surprised it didn't work.
