Hunt on for taxi driver charging 1,500 baht from Don Mueang airport to downtown Bangkok

The Thailand Tourist Police Bureau reported on Facebook that they had received an email from a tourist called Neils Huisman who complained about a taxi rip-off.

The tourist said he and his family had got in a taxi at Don Mueang airport to go into central Bangkok and the driver had not turned on the meter and demanded 1,500 baht for the journey.

It would normally be a few hundred baht.

He refused to pay such a fee and was then taken back to the airport wasting 30 minutes.

He sent the police plenty of photo evidence such as a card with the exorbitant prices, a picture of the cabby, his license plate and tax disc.

The TPB said the hunt is now on.

  • Yes, It must be one hell of a hunt. When having license plate, a picture of the cabby, and the prices in plastic. How would it be to ask the driving company for his home address and knock on the do

The driver was willing to waste 30 minutes and gas, going back to the airport and then go to the back of the taxi queue,  because the tourist wouldn't let him rip the family off.

He'll probably be popping round later with his weekly brown envelope anyway.

Later the Cops will say he will be in for an interview and 500 Baht fine when he has time in about 2024 !    Meanwhile; there will be several stories of 'Honest' cabbies returning millions of Baht to amazed Tourists.

They act like this is something new. Taxis often try to charge flat rates, despite it being illegal.

And taxi companies have been asking outrageous rates at the airport forever. This happens all day every day.

What a stupid article...

Why they do not do a strong law enforcement against the THAI taxi drivers????????

Only when it come to foreigners, they RTP uses the full power of law.

I call that discrimination!!!!!

I've never had much reason to complain about taxi drivers until one journey from the airport.

After asking the driver to put the meter on about 4 times, he turns to me and says 'fixed price...800 THB'. By then we are out of the airport and on the motorway.

I just nod and say 'expensive....but ok'.

He then drives me to my condo wherein I get out of the car, get my bags throw him 200 THB (a fair penalty I thought for taking the p*ss) and simply walk into my condo.

He's standing outside shouting and screaming until the security guard escorts how away.

What's he going to do? Call the police.

Another honest taxi driver, and the police? If they did their job well and enforced these pirates, there would be no need to go hunting!
The Thai taxi driver is as it seems very influential and powerful! Or maybe it's just the helplessness of the police!

He probably thought he was really smart --- even had everything in English!!!!

There's a 'tourist' guy we call Andy Cap in Kan whose mini bus charge is about twice as much to Swampy as to Pattaya and it goes past Swampy to get there!! ????????????

The hunt is on - thank you from the bottom of my heart for making my day.

I missed a flight a month ago as I could not get a taxi from Impact (I attended the Thaifex exhibition) to Don Meuang; a trip which takes 15 minutes through some backroads which I've been doing before many times.

The cheapest was B 500; the most expensive was B 1200 - some did not even stop as they had picked up some other victims earlier on. For B 500 I finally had to settle and the guy had to get a refill on liquid gas or something despite me telling him that he had 30 minutes time to get me to the airport.

I got off at Don Meuang and just walked away, left him with the open door; shouting an commotion - I bought a new ticket and will never ever attend any function at Impact anymore.

While the clowns buy submarines and plan new aircraft purchases for a de-facto bankrupt national airline they cannot manage to get basics right like public transport access to its biggest exhibition ground or break the taxi mafia's back!

Ofcourse, there is always an idiot willing to cough up 1500 bath for a 250 Baht drive.  So if he is able to catch a falang or 2 even 1 his day is good. I can imagine he only does this for the falang and charges Thai the normal rate.

When I go to either airport once I get into a cab I ask them is your meter working o.k. and can you turn it on please.  A smile after this question is never given. Put the trains on at both airport 24 hours per day is the solution.

Just another day in BangKorupt.Tho to be fair there cheatin taxi drivers everywhere.

Where and how do I report a cheating taxi driver.  I was looking for a GRAB at 6PM at Immigration Bangkok when the only taxi quoted me 200b to take me to IT square.  I promptly took a photo of his ID placard and the license plate.

I'd like to report him.

i'm glad i travel almost exclusively with my wife in thailand.  don't think any taxi/tuk tuk has ever ripped us off and if you met my wife, you'd realise they wouldn't dare ????

Don't bother. I called the number once and was told to call the tourist police. I called the tourist police and they told me to call the taxi complaint number. IF calling the number had any effect, do you think the drivers would still refuse to use their meter. The number is just for show and has no real purpose.

I had a taxi driver at Swampy refuse to use the meter when I asked before getting in the taxi. He said no, I walked away and he called me back and said okay. Then he drove a long roundabout way to my destination to make the fare what he had quoted to begin with. Memo to self - just keep walking next time.

What a stupid article...

We have never had a problem going through the taxi service at Don Muang. They always ask if we are in a hurry and will pay for using the toll roads, or go by the slower route. Always happy with the meter price and give a tip for good service.

Stick with the train. Taxi scum are only my last resort anywhere in Thailand

That's downright criminal...

More criminal than the other criminal things that they do.
