Thai drinker dead after downing a jug of beer at competition

A Thai man taking part in a beer drinking competition died after downing a whole jug 

 

He staggered about, passed out and died, said a post on "Mor Lab Panda" on Facebook. 

 

It was last Saturday. The poster said that he used to take part in drinking competitions but had retired as it was just too dangerous. 

 

Sanook said that a while back there was a drinking contest in Isaan when a shop advertised free booze if you could polish off 25 shots in 25 seconds. 

 

Channel 3 reported that the death was a first case in Thailand at a drinking competition. Dr Niphon Chinanonwet called it "alcohol intoxication" - a medical term.

Channel 3 said that 20-50 mg in the blood made you happy. But 50+ started to get serious. 

 

Sanook said 400+ and you were likely to die. 

 

Relatives of the deceased were preparing a funeral at Wat Suan Rom Baramee in Phitsanulok in Thailand's north. They would not speak to reporters. 

 

An investigation is underway into drinking competitions.

Is it something to do with Asians often being lactose intolerant which seems to get them drunk easier? I read an article about it years back.

 

A jug isn't that large. In the UK a 'yard of ale' is a common amount to drink for a competition, that's only around three imperial pints (about 1.5 litres).

I bet that most guys reading this article can reminisce about their youth and the yard glass sculling competitions they had at parties.   Right or wrong, drinking your mates under the table is, always has been, and always will be, a badge of honour.

 

It's called beer group pressure.   Some know when to stop, and others don't.

 

Former Australian PM Bob Hawke held the world record for sculling a yard glass at Oxford uni for many years.

An alcoholic for much of his early life he still had a sharp mind right up to the end.

I did a few pub crawls in the 1980's in Richmond,Melb'ne when there was a pub on every corner.

Dangerous business. Don't recommend it ...LOL.

It''s not possible to die just from one jug, even it it's large, some 1.5 litre one. Unless he was an alcoholic and was on disulfiram, anti alcohol medicine. Or had some serious medical condition - heart attack, stroke, burst aorta.

Autopsy should be carried, not what his drunk mates said to the journalists.

If body is alkohol intoxicated it rejects more of it and have to puke.

A jug of beer will make me drunk, but able to walk

an autopsy would read DIED FROM NATURAL CAUSES usually the case here !!

If, it would have been a farang that died the same way, then there would be a lot of RIP here, Why not show the same respect when it happens to a Thai, that are a part of the population that welcomes you all to this country?

RIP, to the guy and I sincerely hope he enjoyed his last beer.

Nope, bluesofa, sorry for having to correct you.  Lactose intolerance has got nothing to do with it (it is only related to the inability to digest dairy products).

 

Instead, it is the lack of a certain enzyme, aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH), in a large proportion of Asians that prevents their bodies from properly metabolizing alcohol. It makes them get drunk faster, with an equivalent amount of alcohol having a much more violent effect on their system than, say, a European drinker would experience. Recovery also can take much longer than with a westerner, with hangover symptoms being considerably more severe.

 

Obviously, not all Asians have a ALDH deficiency, though, as evidenced by the astonishing volumes of "lao khao" that some Thai blokes seem to be able to ingest day after day at the local mom and pop shop.

Indeed, Koreans are one of the most prolific drinkers in Asia with their soju...

I cannot believe a jug of beer however quickly downed could kill you,despite the informative post of Misterwhisper, possibly he had been drinking something else before,or as others have suggested had some other medical problem.If we are talking vodka,gin or other hard liquor yes quite possible.

Good post would totally agree,caucasians have developed this enzeyme over thousands of years of alcohol consumption,Asians,native Americans,Australian aborigines have not.

Thanks for putting me straight on that one. The two seemed linked, but it may have be  been two discussions running into one.
It was a long time ago I read it in a newsgroup soc.culture.thai (remember those?) in the days when the internet ran on DOS - so must be twenty-five-years ago now.
