Has Pattaya really changed that much?

First came to Thailand about 7 years ago. Was like Disneyland for blokes. Liked it so much after a couple of years came here to live and been here ever since. Last time I was in Pattaya about 4 years ago and seemed to me things had changed. Didn't have the fun casual "anything can happen" relaxed vibe I remembered. Girls in the bars were totally unenthusiastic, they'd be all sitting out the front on their phones and would barley look up. The only ones who were interested would be a couple of old girls and once they latched onto you it was like they'd claimed you as their territory and you would have to move on to have any chance of finding a decent girl. Soi Nana bars have gotten to the point I wont even go in. Same thing usually happens but they are demanding drinks almost immediately. I know the score and they are their to earn money but I'm not going to sit and buy drinks for someone I am not interested in. Refusal of a drink usually ends up in abuse. Management don't seem to control the girls in any way. Bar bins are loaded up with drinks you never had or never bought and maybe one or 2 of the old girls bar fines.

 

I live up country and have been thinking about going to Pattaya reliving some old memories. Had a few friends go recently and were disappointed said not like it used to be at all. Most of the girls asking silly money, very much an up to you attitude. Also said very few punters around which I would have thought good. Are all the decent girls on the internet dating sites now? I'm happy to go to and old school bar and buy a few drinks but I don't see the point of paying 2000-3000 baht drinks, 3000-5000 baht for the girl and bar fine too, only to get back home and the girl has a bad attitude as often happens. I never used to go to walking street, mainly stick to the beer bar soi's. Are you better off finding a quiet bar on the dark side or near Jomtien? Have things really changed that much?

I visit Pattaya regularly and the general opinion among experience punters is that it's had it.

 

The other night I visited two GGBs in Walking Street and you could count the customers on your fingers. 99 B draft beer and 200 B LDs.

 

WS itself was absolutely heaving with Indian and Oriental foot traffic.

 

I later I visited the usually popular Bamboo Bar and 75% of the tables were empty. I've never ever seen it like that before.

 

Many girls are beginning to express intense anger towards their govt and Mr Prayut in particular.

I used to own a condo there and saw the writing on the wall (and sold at a loss). The 'feeling' has changed over the years but, to be fair, good times can still be had but not on Walking Street which is really hard core. The people in Pattaya (i.e. girls) have always been 'harder' but what can you expect working there night in and night out?  I always try to find a 'new' friend who has not been there long and so still has some provincial 'charm'. Keep hunting! (it's half the fun anyway).

Who said I would go to Pattaya looking for love or that I am a drunk old guy? I think you're confused. Pattaya is about fun and girls selling a service to customers. It's a transaction of course but always better when pleasant and win win for both parties.

Actually I met my school teacher wife on Thaifriendly. Happy married now for 4 years. She owns vast tracks of land in Nan - invested her school salary - and employs people to harvest her stuff whilst living with me to help her family.  She also goes out to work to help our income when needed , doing school work, office work - or even gate security at a push in an emergency. So, your theory is somewhat wrong.

Sign of the times that it may not be what it once was .. But it will continue with the increase in visitors from China , India and to a lesser extent Arab countries .. But as it goes forward the place is creaking at the seams in being able to function .. The traffic and associated pollution are choking the city and the general state of the place in some area's is a bigger put off .. And we all know what happens when it rains hard ..

Last time there...about 1 year ago...ended up going to Jomtien Beach Road...soi 6...ladies were relatively young...attractive enough...and understood why I came there...never disappointed...

 

Also used ThaiFriendly to hookup with a couple of freelancers from that area...very enjoyable time...no rush...better than I expected...lovely girls...

 

I never go to the bars around Pattaya as the owners there pressure the girl to hustle watered down drinks and pad the bill...I would like to see them all close.

The place is an overpriced, sleazy, polluted, congested dump of a City.  It has changed beyond imagination in the 30 years I have been coming to Thailand and now living here. Jomtien is going the same way, as will Bang Saray eventually.   I go there to go to Immigration and then get out as quickly as possible, back to sense and reason down the coast.

Been living in Pattaya for over a decade and yes it has changed . Regarding girls as a single guy i can no longer stand them not because of the silly prices, but also because of stupidity that comes out of their mouth.

 

50 year old granmas, with zero english working in bars is hardly a turn on.

 

Have not had Thai girl for a while now, whenever i get the urge to have fun, i shoot over to Jakarta. 

 

I am yet to have a bad experience with any of the girls there, or struggle with language as all girls in the game speak good enough English, can navigate the maps and find hotel instead of standard thai "i not know"

 

So moral of the story is if girls it is you after, go to Jakarta and go crazy, just keep in mind if drinking heavily is your thing, Jakarta is expansive, but on the bright side, 4 star hotels are only 1200 baht ????

Back in 2012, when the OP visited Pattaya for the first time, the city was long dead. 

 

Pattaya died around 2005, with the Russian invasion. 

 

I have nothing against Russians, but these people arrived thinking it was a family destination like Marbella or something like that. 

 

They paid whatever was asked, having no idea of the correct prices, and the bubble started to inflate from there, while the long time returning visitors started to fly away. 

 

Before 2005 or so, Pattaya was a giant party, starting every day around 6pm and going on until the early hours of the morning. 

 

On one side were single European males, most over 40, and on the other side were thousands of young and svelte Thai girls, eager to please. 

 

European women were as rare as Peruvian dancers, and children non existent. 

 

Chinese were already there, but mostly confined to Mike shopping mall, whose parking was full with their buses every evening. 

 

Girls working inside were under tight control of a mamasan, and those working outside were making it difficult for us, male farangs, to walk along the sidewalks. 

 

Walking on the beach walk, a regular guy would have his crotch massaged 10 or 20 times before reaching Walking Street. 

 

Even before getting there, he would visit soi Pattayaland 1 and 2, where it was difficult to walk because of the crowds (today these soi are totally dead). 

 

My phone was full with phone numbers of girls who actually called me to go lunch or to the movies in the afternoon, without any thought of money in the back of their head... can you imagine that today? 

 

In the early 00s, I lived in a permanent party for 2 or 3 years... I am happy and lucky to have had this privilege, too sad for those who came after...
