A hazing ritual has left a Thai secondary school student in a coma in hospital.

 

Hazing is the custom of elder pupils welcoming younger students into their group.

 

A Facebook post said that a M3 (third year of secondary school) student was kicked in the chest and stopped breathing.

 

He also suffered swelling on the brain after a beating and is now in a coma. 

 

Those responsible for the attack are believed to have fled to an eastern province, said Sanook. 

 

Royal Thai Police deputy spokesman Pol Col Krissana Pattanacharoen confirmed that three M3 students were hospitalized after hazing carried out by M6 pupils in a ceremony in Wat Khae sub-district at 1 am on June 29th.

 

The students were all at a Nakorn Pathom school. 

 

Nakhorn Chaisri police are investigating preparing witness statements and court orders with the help of other authorities. The parents had filed charges. 

 

Krissana called for the practice of hazing in a violent form to stop. 

 

Thaivisa notes that hazing has often caused problems over the years. It is supposed to just belittle the younger generation but things sometimes get out of hand when excessive violence is used.

Sadly bigger kids realise that they are physically stronger than smaller ones and if there is not a mentality in place to stop bullying or hazing as they term it locally, it will often get out of hand, and not just in Thailand. Very sad to hear this case has resulted in a serious outcome and I hope the lad recovers.

Heaping punishment on the older kids involved is one thing, though it is the wider mentality that accepts it, and allows it to happen in the first place which needs to be addressed if we are not to see more reports of a similar nature in the future.

What a vile way of "welcoming" new students. In fact the aim of these deplorable, violent "rituals" is nothing else but to humiliate new students to the highest degree possible - and often enough, as in this case, with dire consequences.

 

This has been going on for decades under the guise of being a "time-honored custom", with the "rituals" frequently turning into sinister torture sessions out of which "older students" seem to draw some sadistically perverse pleasure. It is disgusting. And all of this in a country that - so it is constantly flogged to the world by official bodies like TAT - prides itself of being inhabited by oh so gentle, friendly and mild-mannered people.

 

High time to make hazing illegal and prosecute active participation under criminal law.

The government could easily stamp this vile practice out if they had the will, but to many "phu yai" it is seen as an important part of Thai culture designed to instill a sense that one owes unfailing loyalty to and must always do what their "elders / betters" tell them, whether they agree with it or not. The opposite of what is taught in most modern societies.

when will the govt grow a pair and ban hazing totally so it no longer happens, The student that did it need to be locked up and parents hit with heavy fines, if the one in serious condition dies they need to be charged with manslaughter at least. This is absolute bullsh*t to be happening in this day and age, my wife was nearly drowned when she went to uni as they threw her off a low bridge and she couldnt swim, luckily someone realized she was drowning and dived in and saved her. Last year another student died after hazing as well, this is beyond a joke and only brain dead idiots do it, ban it totally and make heavy fines and jail time on anyone participating in it, any schools participating need to face charges as well for allowing it

Given that the government is a Junta that seized power under the threat of extreme violence on it's own citizens, and uses similar techniques to force unquestioning compliance from it's own young recruits, I'd say we'll be waiting a while.

Yes, absolutely! Welcome to our school, and witness how intelligent we become after 6 years of study.

The only solution to this is to punish the perps to the full extent of the law. Also make the parents responsible in the highest way possible, as well as a really big fine for the school and a withdrawal of license to teach if the same happens again.

Those in charge of the school/uni need to have charges brought against them as well as the students. Only way to stop this BS by the older students is to threaten their seniors with criminal sanction and arrest ... then it will stop.

yes,

But the kids in Thailand, learn the Fist and the Boot, from a very early age.

The parents are great teachers.

The real problem is that the whole ethos and atmosphere of bullying's being permissible is set FROM THE VERY TOP. It is ENDEMIC: the 'elites' have the perfect right and duty (so they think) to bully and subjugate - in all conceivable ways - the inferiors beneath them.

The veneer of civilisation is thin.

In some areas of the world it is showing wear and cracks.

I will only say that the pack killer instinct is in all of us but to control it requires education from adults who are actually interested in educating.

Perhaps some of those so called adults actually feel fear from their students and just ignore it and think in doing so, ignoring, makes them feel 'not guilty'.

Hazing is still a version of mob violence, that is condoned by either spineless people, cowards, who like to think their wealth will protect them, or actively encourage it because they can't stand up for what is right.
