Up until now i thought it was only Thai drivers who blamed faulty brakes.

If as they claim the bike had dodgy brakes, why did they take it?

Or sue the people they rented it off?

Totally out of the question. Sue the hospital instead. No hospital in the world have the right to take away a value paper issued from another government.

And the Thai govt have the gall to say that foreigners leave a lot of unpaid bills.

Another load of hogwash to add to their xenophobic narrative

I have a different novel idea. Those that rent the bikes have insurance to cover those renting them.

Uh-huh. And where would they buy that cover?

The first thing I do before riding is check the front brake lever for a firm response. No mention of experience, but if they were trying to use the back brake only on a steep downhill...................

BTW starting procedure for an auto bike?

so i am renting a scooter in Thailand and I see it only has one mirror. I say to the lady I need two mirrors. She says OK use this scooter.
So i change scooters and I start to adjust the mirrors so I can see behind me and she says "Why Farang always worry what is behind? Just worry what is in front."

Becouse this farang, after living 8 years in this country, when I drive my motobike and car, YET I’m here thanks to look, almost at the same time, at front, behind, up, down, on the sides and both mirrows continuously... Stressssed, but ALIVE.

Seems to be a big bill for what appears to be minor injuries.

I'd like to see what cost them 300k+

My misses just arraigned for an old Dutch guy to be fixed up after falling off his m/c.

30k for the hospital (broken hip) paid by insurance, 25k for a month in a care home while he's plastered paid by him.

I'm interested in knowing the insurance company name.

25,000 a month to stay plastered sounds good. Does it include transport to and from the bars.

????????

Sorry.

????????

Would be interesting to know what their medical insurance paid out for? and what the 7k raised covered?

Maybe they genuinely had holiday insurance but it did not cover them in this instance/scenario at all, and they ended up paying 5k out of their own pocket and savings coming up short with the full amount (ruling their Australia ????????trip out completely afterwards, which was mentioned in another article about them) without wanting to admit to it... just saying etc... but I could be wrong... if I am, then I fully apologise ????

As a general rule in Thailand ???????? if you hire a scooter 125cc... then your medical insurance will only cover you if your UK ???????? driving license allows you the type of vehicle that you are entitled to drive back home.

In this instance the driver should of had a CBT (2 year issue) licence as a minimum that allows him to drive 125cc scooters back home with “L” plates or a full motorcycle licence.

Seen it so many times over the years whilst working in Thailand with fellow UK ???????? nationals hiring scooters without actually having the licence back home to do so...  unfortunately when an incident or accident occurs and the injured have to go hospital ???? the first thing medical insurance companies will advise is that you pay some of the bill and they will reimburse you during or after your hospital stay depending on the severity of your injuries.

Once they establish that you do not hold a valid license for the type of vehicle you used, they will then render your case as invalid and dismissed as you do not legally have the licence to begin with in the UK ???????? and will claim that “why are you hiring a motor vehicle that you are not entitled to drive back home?”

Note of caution “always read the small print and make sure your covered in every eventuality involving the hire of motor vehicles abroad”

Also to avoid confusion... A Full UK ???????? driving licence excluding motorbike only covers you on mopeds (50cc) only.  Anything over 50cc like the 125cc is classed as a scooter so legally you would need a CBT as minimum covering you on 125cc or a full motorcycle licence that will cover you on any other type of motorcycle above 125cc.

Wishing them a speedy recovery either way ????????????

What's a CBT please?

RE - If as they claim the bike had dodgy brakes, why did they take it?

* Because the first test of the brakes was the last before they took off at low altitude…

BTW, the bill from the renting Company was never mentioned ...

Wonder why only half was covered by insurance?

At least they had taken out insurance for the trip

Probably because the insurance co. realise what a ripoff that particular hospital chain is.

Also I thought it was illegal even by Thai law for hospitals to hold your passports to ransom???

help me please  !   i'm in urgent need of a holiday and would like to set up Go fund me. I think 300,000 baht should cover it .

I could get by on far less than that.

30k would do me.

Unless they had severe injuries, which it doesn't look like it or mentioned not sure why they even went to Saumi, there is a new hospital on Tao and plenty of clinics to stitch people up...not as if its the 1st time someone crashed a bike....the cost for a speedboat evac to Samui is 50,000bt to start with.

The couple’s insurance company would only cover some of the cost...

This is so typical for ALL insurance companies.
It's about JUST as typical to say that your motorbike had a brake failure.

It’s illegal to confiscate passports which are technically property of the (here) British Government.  They should have contacted the embassy and requested new passports.  The hospital could then pursue the balance - unlikely to be paid of course.  But they have no right to withhold passports and the fact that this is their policy leaves me unsympathetic.

Once I had dollars only and hospital at BKK did not accept so they withold passport until THB was exchanged and paid . TIT

Alternative idea,

Stop ripping tourists off by putting them in expensive private hospitals.

Expensive Private hospitals that overcharge foreigners!  Exactly how much is this country raking in, by overcharging foreigners in hospitals????

If the motorbike had faulty brakes, then sue the renting Company.

Did the driver of the motorbike even have a valid drivers license?
