"A temple is not a catwalk!" - Thais slam British tourist for temple pictures

Maybe to a Christian what goes on in a Thai Temple is offensive.Remember someone throwing out the traders and moneylenders, saying this is my fathers house.

Maybe if the Thais stopped all commercial activities in the Wat(Temple) grounds, they might get a little more respect.

  • I agree now stop the Thais talking on their mobiles inside, chatting loudly, taking selfies with Buddha images and we are all square!

Can't see anything wrong in the photo. Thais need to get over themselves.

Oh, I forgot - the prevalent religion here is a total perversion of the principal teachings of Buddha and is such a far cry from the original guidance that it shouldn't even bear his name. He even specifically told people not to build temples and to just walk the path instead. Now """monks""" deal dope, rape kids, get in fights on public transport, get drunk at parties and storm schools to molest underage students and punch teachers during exams, and basically sit around getting fat all day playing on their phone. Every time I go to Central I can spot at least one waddling about looking for a new phone. Meanwhile they get subsidized by overcharged dopey farangs on some enlightenment trip and Thais who think throwing a bit of money about will absolve them of any repercussions from stupid behavior. How is anyone with a brain supposed to respect any of this?

Ask any Thai what their "training" consists of and you realize there is 0 incentive or enforcement in their "practice". If you want to see real Buddhism in this supposedly Buddhist country you have to go to a Vipassana meditation center.

One of the few good things about the wats is free parking. I pay my taxes so feel freely entitled to use their parking and toilets. The other good thing is photoshoot locations. I sincerely hope the Brit doesn't cave in to this hypocritical hoity toity holier-than-thou BS we see so much from Thai people.

I really wanted to say something like that but was advised it might get me into trouble with a certain government department. Now I just don't care anymore. Well said Genmai!

Thai's should concentrate and complain about  the multitude of larger problems they have in their country rather  than some bird prancing around on temple wall

Don't apologise. You did nothing wrong.

It wasn't like she was defecating on the sidewalk, or peeing on the wall or walking around semi-nude. She wasn't in a suggestive post with any of the statues, or sitting on Buddha's head or anything like that. Plus, she was fully dressed and very decently too. Personally, I see nothing provocative. I've seen Thais at temples with shorter skirts and less sleeve than what the lady in the pic was wearing. If there is one word I would use to describe the picture, I'd say it's elegant. A very nice photo.

Now to all the entitled snowflakes - I agree with respecting the religion, the temple, and Buddha. And other religions, for the record. But, I fail to understand, that if Buddha is offended by this mortal walking on the walls of his house, why is he not offended by the foulness of commercialism and stench of discrimination that takes place WITHIN his house - two-tier pricing, separate shoe racks for Thais and foreigners... you name it. I hope the girl ignores these dainty holier-than-thou xenophobic hypocrites.

thank you for the lesson... Unfortunately, Buddha is not here today. instead we have people who are so enlightened they have no shame in judging others and those with no idea of why a temple is considered scared.

I don't get it. She isn't actually in the temple, she is on temple grounds and walking on a railing. One might say classless but not a big deal. Have much worse things happening in the world and I dare say sometimes on Temple property.

It’s OK for the Temples to be full of corrupt Monks on yaba and abandon rabid dogs, but god forbid a well dressed pretty girl should pose for a selfie !

To the locals: Temples are not drug dens, child rapist homes, alcohol den either.

So let me get this right, two tiered pricing and decorating temples with action figures and cartoon characters and you want tourists to treat temples with respect? Now I agree there can be some crude and offensive behavioreven to western standards and that is completely unacceptable. However, given that tourists are treated like cash cows some leniency should be given.

Posing and doing a catwalk. Wonder if they woman would do the same at a cathedral in her home country.

Some respect for local culture when visiting, it is not hard

A beautiful, stylish and well composed picture, such as this, should be used to promote the beauty of Thailand to the world. It would certainly have impacted me as a positive, if contemplating an exotic SE Asian getaway.

Very well put. Always amazing how people of one country interpret things through different standards than people of another country. I don't think Buddha would agree that 2 tier pricing is honorable or the right way

Just senseless stupid tourists again. They probably know and see everybody take off their shoes when entering a temple, and then can´t see the connection to that it´s not ok to put your feet on other things than the ground or floor in a temple area. Just get rid of them. Fine them and deport them. They are a disgrace to human intelligence.

i cant tell you what i think of you and this post mate, i would be banned for life

Let's get this straight - it's because it's a FARANG who has broken those little teenie weenie 'Thai hearts'.

I have seen countless Thais on phones, texting, yapping, eating and taking endless selfies with Buddha images.

   “Close temples to tourists.”

Okay, but what about tourists who are Buddhists and wish to offer their respects and say some chants in the temples?

It would not be right to close the temples to them.

Make selfies illegal, and many related (and unrelated) problems will disappear ????

This is a very tasteful picture! The contrast between the yellow dress and the temple is beautiful. It makes the temple stand out in a very nice way. This actually promotes Thailand very positively for a change.  No problem with that.

Now if we want to talk about disgraceful behavior, how about tackling the taxi drivers peeing and shitting at the end of soi, throwing their garbages everywhere, riding their motobikes on the sidewalks... should I go on??!!
