Foreign Minister’s assurance on Thai democracy at ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Minister of Foreign Affairs has commented that the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Thailand had concluded well, while he reassured other countries that Thailand has always been democratic.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Don Pramudwinai disclosed that the 52nd ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM) hosted by Thailand this year, had come to a successful conclusion, with participating countries discussing topics such as the return of refugees to Myanmar’s Rakhine state, ASEAN’s outlook on the Indo-Pacific and South China Sea issue which Thailand is trying to establish as a sea of peace, with sustainability and security, while hoping that ongoing tension in the South China Sea will de-escalate.

Meanwhile, he said Thailand has reassured participating countries at the meeting on the state of its democracy, with the general election and recent formation of a coalition government as proof, as well as the declaration of the government’s policy statement to the parliament, signifying the democratic values of the country.

On the trade war between Japan and South Korea, the Thai Foreign Minister said no conclusion was reached at the meeting, stressing that both countries can continue to exchange views with each other, while the meeting hopes both sides will discuss the issue further to improve bilateral trust, adding that all conflicts can be resolved in a manner that benefits all sides in the discussion, and that all parties should talk more to each other to reduce conflict and resolve problems.

On ASEAN’s strategy with other regions, he compared the world to a marine environment with ASEAN participants being like peaceful herbivore sea creatures, which are focused on improving trade and cooperation with one another to keep them safe from bigger fish, adding that ASEAN has no intention of controlling or challenging other regions, nor being partisan, nor posing a threat to anyone.

If anything, they are now, as near as you can get to an autocracy !

He's a democratic soldier ya know ????

But seriously the 20 coups attempted or successful seem to paint this latest lie as a particularly graphic, stupid one.

And to be fair ASEAN is at best a dictator / strongman bloc in terms of its member states currently.

Cambodia and Myanmar have elected governments too ????

I may be wrong but I have an awful feeling the man suggesting this did not stand for election and is not a member of a political party. Similarly the current Prime Minister chose not to enter the electoral system and be voted for. This is democracy?

I'm completely reassured how democratic this place is on an hourly basis????

When countries begin claiming to be 'democratic'...it's usually a good indication they are anything but that.

Fossil sites in Kalasin prove that Thailand invented Democracy sometime in the Jurassic, that's long before Greece... :coffee1:

I wonder how many sniggers were heard in the room.

No mention of Asean’s best buddies’ the ChiComs?  And Belt & Road (since we will soon have no Mekong River left)...

he reassured other countries that Thailand has always been democratic.

And the earth is flat.

Yeah, right. as clearly demonstrated by 19 military coup d'etats since 1932.

Yup. with one of these peaceful herbivore sea creatures, Myanmar, persecuting and slaughtering Rohingyas en masse. while another of these peaceful herbivores, Brunei, recently implemented sharia law. Two more of the peaceful herbivores, Thailand and Cambodia, are frequently at each others throats over border demarcation issues. Some of these peaceful herbivores are in the habit of poaching fish in one another's waters -- which somehow is rather unbecoming of a "herbivore". The peaceful herbivores known as Indonesia and Malaysia systematically cut down what remains of their rain forests to make way for palm oil plantations, not only degrading their own habitat in the process but also greatly aiding the world at large in achieving global warming faster. The peaceful herbivore Indonesia also sets huge forest fires each year so its other peaceful herbivore neighbors can peacefully choke on thick smoke clouds. And so on, and so on. But as long as these peaceful herbivores stand united to keep each other safe from "bigger fish", all is swell.

So, they think the world is blind and ignorant

Yeah, and I am sure the other ASEAN foreign ministers were rolling on the floor in laughter. Ah, Thai comedy gold... hard to beat.

Unfortunately, they are so delusional, they probably believe it's true.

What a joke!

History clearly shows the undemocratic way inwhich Thailand has been and is being administered.

Unbelievable!!

Typical Thai mind-set, they cannot accept fault or wrong doing. For a country that has done very little, compared to many other countries, Thai blow hard on a very small trumpet. Which county in recorded history was the biggest Empire? It sure was not Thailand. Does Thailand manufacture it's own vehicles? No! What has Thailand contributed to the world? Aids? Sex industry? Corruption? Extortion? Racism.....?

Paradise

Lie. Lie. Lie and hope nobody questions you.

You have to hand it to the Don. He is almost as good as Somkid the Sleek. But no sign of the Supremo.

His media minders have to keep him well away from the limelight so as not to embarrass the government. Foot in mouth is his speciality.
